Who Will Get the Gujarat FMG Stipend?
The stipend will be available to foreign medical graduates who have completed their MBBS education outside India and are undergoing their mandatory internship at eligible government or GMERS medical colleges in Gujarat.
According to reports, the decision covers FMGs who were allotted internship postings through the Gujarat Medical Council between June 1 and October 1, 2026, in accordance with applicable National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.
Why Is the Stipend Important for Foreign Medical Graduates?
Foreign medical graduates returning to India after completing their medical education abroad are required to complete a period of compulsory internship in India before they can proceed towards medical registration and practice.
The Gujarat government's decision brings eligible FMG interns at par with other interns receiving stipends in the state, addressing a long-standing disparity in financial support during the internship period.
The National Medical Commission has previously clarified that FMGs undergoing the required internship should receive stipend and other facilities equivalent to those available to Indian medical graduates, with the applicable amount determined by the concerned institution, university or state.
Around 350 FMGs Expected to Benefit
The decision is expected to provide financial support to approximately 350 foreign medical graduates who received internship postings during the specified period.
The interns are completing their practical training in government and GMERS medical colleges across Gujarat. The stipend will provide financial assistance during the compulsory internship required for medical registration in India.
FMG Internship Under NMC Rules
The NMC requires foreign medical graduates seeking permanent registration to undergo the prescribed Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) in India. The Commission has also issued directions concerning the allocation of CRMI slots to FMGs through State Medical Councils and concerned medical authorities.
The Gujarat Medical Council is responsible for processes related to FMG provisional registration and CRMI allotment in the state.
Gujarat FMG Stipend: What This Means for Students
The ₹21,840 monthly stipend provides financial support to foreign-trained medical graduates while they complete the internship requirement in Gujarat. More importantly, the decision establishes stipend parity for eligible FMGs undertaking internships in government and GMERS institutions.
FMGs currently undergoing eligible internships should follow instructions issued by the Gujarat Medical Council and their respective medical colleges regarding the disbursement of the stipend.
