Gujarat opens RTE admissions for 2026–27 with over 84,000 Class 1 seats in private schools. Apply online by April 17. Check eligibility, documents, and process.

Gandhinagar : The Gujarat government has commenced the admission process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the academic session 2026–27, offering more than 84,000 seats in Class 1 across private schools.

Parents and guardians are required to complete the online application process by April 17 through the official state portal to secure admission under the RTE quota.

Admissions Across Thousands of Schools

According to the Education Department, the admission drive will cover over 9,700 private schools across the state. These schools offer instruction in multiple languages, including Gujarati, English, Hindi, and Urdu, providing diverse options for families.

As per RTE norms, private unaided schools must reserve 25 percent of their seats for children belonging to economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups.

Application Process and Required Documents

Applicants must fill out the form online and upload essential documents, including:

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Proof of residence
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Income Tax return documents

In cases where parents do not file income tax returns, a self-declaration confirming non-liability to pay income tax must be submitted.

Authorities have clarified that there is no need to submit physical copies after completing the online application. However, parents are advised to keep a printed copy for future reference.

Revised Income Limit and Eligibility

To widen access, the state government has increased the annual income eligibility limit to ₹6 lakh. Families earning below this threshold will be given priority during the admission process.

Additionally, preference will be extended to children from specific vulnerable categories, such as:

  • Orphaned children
  • Children with disabilities
  • Child labourers
  • Children of martyred soldiers
  • Students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Below Poverty Line families

Age Criteria and School Selection

Children must be at least six years old as of June 1, 2026, to be eligible for Class 1 admission. Those younger than the prescribed age will not be considered.

During the application process, parents must select 8 to 10 nearby schools in order of preference. Final allotment will depend on seat availability and the preferences provided.

Fee Coverage Under RTE

Under the provisions of the RTE Act, the state government will bear the cost of tuition fees for admitted students up to Class 8, ensuring continued access to education without financial burden.

Deadline Reminder

The Education Department has urged parents to complete their applications well before the April 17 deadline to avoid last-minute technical or procedural issues.
