Guidelines regarding precautions to be observed by schools to combat the ill effects of the heat wave

New Delhi: In view of the soaring temperature in the capital, Ministry of Education today issued some guidelines for the schools. These guidelines are issued regarding precautions to be observed by schools to combat ill-effects of the heat wave. 

The school would may start early and get over by noon. School would begin from 7:00 am onwards. This implies reduced school hours. Sports or games period may be adjusted early mornings to not to directly expose students to sunlight. School assembly should be conducted in covered area or in classrooms with reduced timing. 

For transportation, Ministry has said, school bus or van should not be overcrowded. And there should be availability of first aid kit and drinking in the transport. Students who prefer coming to school on foot or by bicycle should cover their heads. School bus or van may be parked in a shaded area.

Students are advised to stay hydrated everytime. They should carry their water bottles, caps and umbrellas. Water coolers or earthen pots should be there in the school for cold water. Also, teachers should remind students to sip water time-to-time. Students should be aware about hydration and how it is important to stay hydrated.

Schools should ensure that all fans are functional and all classrooms are properly ventilated. There should be alternate power backup. To avoid direct sunlight entering into the classroom, curtains, newspapers may be used to cover the windows. 

Students may be allowed to wear loose and light colored cotton material dress. Also, students are advised to preferably wear full sleeve shirt to be safe from sunlight. 

First aid kits, which would include sachets of ORS solutions. Salt and sugar solutions should be readily available to treat mild heat-stroke. Teaching and non-teaching staff should be trained to provide first aid to students in case of mild heat-stroke. Schools must ensure quick access to nearest hospital, clinic, doctor or nurse etc in case of heatstroke. 

During examination in the exam centre, students may be allowed to bring their own transparent water bottle. Examination halls may be provided with fans. And these centres should ensure availability of portable drinking water which is easily accessible to the candidates at the centre. 

These guidelines should be followed by schools to avoid any cases of heatstroke.
