Government Expands Scholarships and Fellowships to Support Higher Education and Research
New Delhi.: The Government of India wants to financially support students of different classes to help them pursue higher studies and research. Extending financial aid is a priority for the Ministry of Education, as illustrated by new scholarship and fellowship initiatives dedicated to enhancing postgraduate education and research opportunities.
The Ministry of Education gave the following details in the Rajya Sabha on the initiatives taken by the Government. The initiatives comprise the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies and another fellowship for single girl child - the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship. These initiatives also rely on Direct Benefit Transfers for the disbursement of the aid.
National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies
As of now, the University Grants Commission (UGC) includes the National Scholarship for Post Graduate Studies. The scholarship aims to offer financial aid to Indian students for recognised postgraduate degree programs.
As of now, the UGC states that only students who are admitted to postgraduate degree programs in the first year by regular/ full time admission are eligible. The scholarship is offered to 10,000 selected students for a period of two years, with financial support of ₹1.5 lakhs.
The purpose of the scholarship is to remove financial hindrances faced by students to continue education beyond graduation level, and it is offered on the National Scholarship Portal.
Fellowship Support for Single Girl Child
The Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child is yet another of the innovative schemes. As stated by the UGC, the Fellowship aids a single girl child in pursuing Ph.D. research at recognized universities, colleges, or institutions. The Fellowship covers a duration of 5 years, or until the submission of the Ph.D. dissertation, whichever is earlier.
The UGC, on current terms, extends a Junior Research Fellowship of Rs. 37,000 per month for the first two years and Rs. 42,000 per month for the following years along with the contingency support as applicable. The scheme strives for the development of higher education and research of single girl children and encourages their participation in the Doctoral program.
Direct Benefit Transfer for Scholarships and Fellowships
Another of the details provided by the Ministry is the adoption of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for the disbursement of scholarships and fellowships. By adopting the DBT system, funds are directly remitted to the beneficiaries' bank accounts. It is aimed at benefitting the process of removing intermediaries and improving the transparency of the system.
The scholarship and fellowship schemes are supported by digital means, and one of these is the National Scholarship Portal, which is the main scholarship resource centre. Under the current student section of the UGC, both scholarship and fellowship opportunities are available, and the links for both the application and support resources are provided.
Focus on Financial Assistance for Postgraduate and Research Levels
Students face additional costs at the postgraduate and research study levels, including tuition, accommodation, research, and other related costs. For these study levels, there are numerous government scholarships and fellowships that help students pay for these additional education costs and allow them to continue with their studies and pursue higher qualifications.
The UGC has a student support framework that includes the Post-Graduate National Scholarship as well as several other scholarships like the IshanUday Special Scholarship for the North Eastern Region. The UGC also has the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child and the Junior Research Fellowship in Science, Humanities and Social Sciences in its fellowship section.
What Students Should Check
Students should check the eligibility criteria, the dates for application, the course requirements, and all other information that is related to the UGC national scholarship using the UGC and National Scholarship Portal websites. The UGC has official requirements regarding admission to a postgraduate program that is appropriate and full-time, as well as the appropriate age for Post Graduate Studies.
To apply for the Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship, applicants must be registered in a PhD program and a single girl child as per the scheme requirements. In addition, the official guidelines state that a PhD program that is offered on a part-time or distance basis is not appropriate for the scholarship.
Final Thoughts
Scholarship and fellowship programs are a part of a broader concentration on breaking barriers of access to higher education and research. A suite of digital payment options, postgraduate scholarships, and doctoral fellowships works together to provide financing for higher education. This suite is designed to help students pursue their studies beyond the undergraduate level. For those seeking scholarships, the advice is simple: determine which level of funding best fits your education stage, learn about the most recent changes to eligibility, and utilize the official funding pages for on-line applications and notification of funding.
