New Delhi: In a significant step towards realizing the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Ministry of Education has launched three key initiatives to promote multilingualism in Indian education. The initiatives, ASMITA, Bahubhasha Shabdkosh, and Real-time Translation Architecture, aim to enhance the learning and usage of mother tongues and regional languages in higher education. Union Education and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan post on social media platform "X".
The initiatives were launched by Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education, during the valedictory session of the "UGC Workshop on Writing Textbooks in Bharatiya Bhasha for Higher Education".
ASMITA, a collaborative effort between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, aims to produce 22,000 books in 22 scheduled languages within five years. This initiative will help make higher education more inclusive and accessible to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Bahubhasha Shabdkosh, a joint project of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, plans to create a comprehensive multilingual dictionary repository. This repository will serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, and scholars, promoting the usage and learning of Bharatiya Bhasha.
Real-time Translation Architecture, developed by the National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, aims to develop a framework for enhancing real-time translation in Bharatiya Bhasha. This initiative will facilitate the seamless translation of educational resources, making them more widely available and accessible.
These initiatives align with the NEP 2020's emphasis on promoting multilingualism in Indian education, recognizing the importance of mother tongues and regional languages in the country's linguistic diversity. By supporting the development and usage of Bharatiya Bhasha, these initiatives will help strengthen India's cultural heritage and promote inclusive education.
