Government Invites Nominations for Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2026 to Recognise Scientific Excellence

Prestigious national awards aim to honour scientists, innovators, and researchers across 14 disciplines. Nominations open till May 11, encouraging participation from institutions and individuals nationwide.

The Ministry of Science and Technology India has opened nominations for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP) 2026, a flagship national initiative aimed at recognising excellence in science, technology, and innovation. Administered by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the guidance of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, the awards seek to honour individuals and teams whose work has significantly contributed to India’s scientific progress and national development.

The awards cover a wide spectrum of disciplines, including agricultural science, space technology, medicine, engineering, environmental science, and computer science, among others. Nominations—including self-nominations—are invited from across the country, making the process more inclusive and accessible for deserving candidates from diverse fields of research and innovation.

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be conferred across four categories: Vigyan Ratna for lifetime achievements, Vigyan Shri for distinguished contributions, Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar for promising young scientists below 45 years, and Vigyan Team for collaborative research excellence. This structure ensures recognition at different stages of a scientific career, encouraging both individual brilliance and teamwork.

According to officials, the nomination process is being conducted online through the government’s awards portal and will remain open from March 28 to May 11, 2026. The Ministry has urged academic institutions, research organisations, industry bodies, and individuals to actively participate in nominating candidates to ensure wider representation of India’s scientific talent.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasised that the awards reflect the government’s commitment to promoting a culture of innovation and inquiry. He highlighted that recognising scientists and innovators is essential for strengthening India’s position as a global knowledge leader, adding that such initiatives play a key role in advancing the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ through science-driven development.
