Goa Public Schools Face Enrollment Decline as Teacher Job Applications Surge Beyond Vacancies

Goa’s public education sector is witnessing declining student enrollment alongside a sharp rise in applications for limited government teaching positions, highlighting a growing imbalance within the state’s education system.

Goa’s public education system seems to have run into further issues with their operations. Alongside a decline in student attendance, there appears to be a significant gap between skilled teachers and jobs for such. Goa’s Staff Selection Commission or the SSC has reported an astronomical amount of applications for their severely limited job postings.

The Staff Selection Commission or the SSC posted an employment opportunity for 390 vacancies within their network of public schools; this posting was met with over 2000 applicants, 2063 to be exact. Out of these 2000 applicants, 1626 applicants were for Marathi speaking positions while 437 were for their Konkani counterparts. These jobs were primarily for government primary school positions.

The State Government has attributed the fall in demand of public school teachers to the decline in attendance in said schools. Fewer and fewer students are enrolling as well as attending public schools in favor of the generally better equipped private schools in their respective areas.

It has been noted in the Union District Information System for Education or UDISE’s report for the 2024-25 academic year that for the first time ever, student enrollment rates in private schools have surpassed the counts for public ones.

There are currently 41,146 students enrolled in private unaided, recognized schools throughout Goa with only 35,974 in government run schools. Currently, the number of government run institutions sits at around 773 including both primary and secondary levels but only 141 private, unaided schools operate in Goa.

Private, aided schools carry the brunt of it however, with there being 558 functioning in the union holding approximately 218,183 students within their ranks at all levels of education from kindergarten to high school. This marks a noticeable shift away from state run institutions in favor of schools affiliated with the CBSE boards etc.

The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant issued a statement prior talking about the shifting from aided government schools whilst also encouraging a reversal of such. At the official event on teacher’s day, Sawant spoke directly to parents vouching for the quality of government schools citing that these schools have a better infrastructure as well as a more invested and educated staff comparative to certain private schools.
