The National Medical Commission, which everyone commonly calls NMC, has officially given green signal to increase the MBBS seats at Government Medical College Jammu. This major update has come out on July 12, 2026, when the official letter was sent to the college administration. For a very long time, medical students of the state was demanding for more seats because the competition is getting very high every year. Total Seat Capacity Jumps to 250 :
Before this new order came, GMC Jammu had a total capacity of 200 MBBS seats for the students every year. But after this fresh approval from the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC, the college will now have 250 seats in total. This means straight 50 extra students will get the chance to study in this premium government college from the upcoming academic session 2026-27. The official Letter of Permission says that this decision was taken under the Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act of 2019. The university have already started preparing their arrangements so that the admission process for these new seats can happen smoothly without any delay.
Strict Rules and Infrastructure Check Done :
Getting these extra seats from the central government was not an easy thing for the college. The MARB department did a very strict checking of all the online documents and college records before giving the final nod. The president of the board digitally signed the permission order after checking everything properly. Now, GMC Jammu have to take full responsibility to maintain high quality education and facilities. They have to make sure that the building safety, hospital beds, teaching staff, and lab equipment matches the high standards of NMC throughout the academic year. If any things does not match the rules, then the commission can take action, so the college management is working very hard now.

When more students will pass out as doctors from the college, the local government hospitals will get more workforce to handle the patient rush.
