As global education pathways expand and careers become increasingly international, Indian students and parents are exploring opportunities beyond borders. To understand how students can prepare for global exposure while staying rooted in Indian values, EduAdvice spoke with Dr. Samrat Ray, Dean, School of Management at Alard University, who brings over two decades of international academic and research experience.
A Journey Shaped by Global Exposure
Dr. Ray has spent more than 20 years living and working across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. A former Russian Government Scholar, he holds a PhD from a top 100 global university in St. Petersburg, Russia. With over 200 high-impact research publications, 10 international books, and multiple international patents, his career reflects deep engagement with global research ecosystems.
“Living abroad and working with students and professionals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds shaped my understanding of education as a tool for inclusive growth,” Dr. Ray said. “When I returned to India, my goal was to blend global academic thinking with India’s strong ethical and cultural foundation.”
Global Opportunities for Indian Students
According to Dr. Ray, India’s emergence as a multipolar global economy has created a strong demand for internationally trained professionals. Indian students today have access to undergraduate pathways, semester exchanges, summer and winter schools, joint degree programmes, and global internships.
“Earlier, the US was the only major destination. Now students have opportunities across Europe, Germany, Russia, the Middle East, and Asia,” he explained. “Global exposure equips students with cultural adaptability and professional maturity, which gives them an edge when they return to India or work with global corporations.”
How Global Universities Evaluate Indian Students
Dr. Ray noted that global universities assess students holistically. While academic merit remains important, institutions increasingly look for communication skills, analytical ability, discipline, and behavioural maturity.
“Top universities such as those in the Ivy League or Russell Group do not focus only on marks. They evaluate a student’s overall personality, ethical grounding, and capacity to contribute to society,” he said.
Indian vs Global Universities: A Mindset Difference
Highlighting a key contrast, Dr. Ray pointed out that Indian students often choose institutions based on placement statistics, whereas global universities prioritise academic integrity and knowledge creation.
“Abroad, students are driven by the quality of education, not placement ratios,” he said. “India must move towards a value-based education system where learning outcomes matter more than immediate job numbers.”
Is Studying Abroad Worth the Investment?
Addressing concerns around return on investment (ROI), Dr. Ray acknowledged the financial challenges but emphasised long-term benefits.
“Studying abroad offers exposure to world-class infrastructure, research facilities, and professional networks,” he said. “At the same time, India is growing rapidly, and many students are returning to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.”
He also noted that the rise of foreign university campuses and joint programmes in India has made global education more accessible and affordable.
Skills Needed in the Age of AI and Digital Transformation
With AI reshaping industries, Dr. Ray believes Indian students are well positioned due to their strengths in engineering, software development, and analytical thinking.
“Indian professionals are already contributing significantly to global technology ecosystems. Building digital skills alongside ethics and problem-solving ability is key,” he said.
Advice for Parents and Students
Dr. Ray advised parents to support global education while encouraging students to stay focused on learning rather than migration.
“Education should be the goal, not relocation,” he said. “Students should acquire global knowledge and return to contribute to India’s development.”
He also cautioned students against choosing institutions without proper evaluation of academic quality and long-term relevance.
A Message for Students Who Dream Big
Ending on an encouraging note, Dr. Ray urged students not to doubt themselves.
“India is a vibrant and fast-growing nation. With policy reforms and digital education, students can access global learning even while studying in India,” he said. “Choose wisely, think logically, and do not put unnecessary pressure on your parents. The right decision can be life-changing.”
