GATE 2027 is being organized by IIT Madras and is conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The examination assesses candidates' understanding of undergraduate-level subjects across Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities.
What is GATE?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination that assesses candidates' understanding of subjects studied at the undergraduate level. GATE 2027 will be conducted across 30 test papers, and candidates can appear for either one paper or up to two papers from the permitted combinations.
A valid GATE score can be used for seeking admission to various Master's and Doctoral programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Humanities, as well as certain doctoral programmes in Commerce and Arts. Qualified candidates may also be eligible for financial assistance in programmes supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, subject to the respective institution's rules.
Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes. However, qualifying GATE itself does not guarantee admission, financial assistance or PSU employment; these are subject to the eligibility and selection criteria of the respective institution or organisation.

Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?
Candidates currently studying in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree programme, or those who have completed a government-approved degree programme in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, are eligible to appear for GATE 2027.
Candidates with degrees such as B.E./B.Tech./B.Pharm., B.Arch., B.Sc./B.S., B.A., B.Com., BCA, M.Sc., M.A., MCA and integrated degree programmes, among others, can be eligible depending on their year of study and programme structure.
Candidates who have completed or are pursuing qualifying degrees from outside India can also appear, subject to the eligibility requirements specified by GATE 2027.
There is no age limit for appearing in GATE 2027, and candidates can appear for the examination multiple times.
GATE 2027 Application Fee
The application fee varies according to the candidate category and whether the candidate chooses one or two test papers.

The extended-period fee applies after the regular registration deadline.
GATE 2027 Examination Cities
GATE 2027 will be conducted only at centres within India. International examination centres will not be available this year. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad can appear for GATE 2027, but they must select an examination city in India and make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
Candidates can select six examination cities, with all six choices required to be from the same GATE zone. The organising committee may add or remove examination cities and may allot a city different from the choices submitted by a candidate due to operational requirements.
Documents Required for GATE 2027 Registration
Candidates should keep the necessary information and documents ready before completing the application. GATE 2027 requires registration through DigiLocker for Indian nationals, with relevant information fetched from the account.
Candidates will need details related to their:
- Degree and qualifying examination
- Institute or college
- Choice of GATE test paper
- Six preferred examination cities
- Payment method
A live photograph will be captured during registration. Candidates should therefore use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a front-facing camera of at least 5 MP and capture the photograph in a well-lit area. Photograph and signature uploads must also meet the prescribed specifications.
SC/ST candidates seeking the applicable fee concession must provide the required category certificate. PwD candidates must upload the prescribed disability documentation, including a UDID certificate where applicable.
Why is GATE Useful for Students?
GATE can be relevant for students who plan to pursue higher education, research or certain PSU recruitment opportunities after graduation.
A qualifying GATE score may be used for admission to Master's and Doctoral programmes at institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies. A qualifying score may also be used to seek financial assistance for eligible postgraduate and doctoral programmes, subject to the rules of the concerned institution.
In addition, several PSUs use GATE scores in their recruitment processes. However, the official GATE website clarifies that a GATE qualification does not by itself guarantee admission, financial assistance or a PSU job. Candidates must meet the requirements and selection criteria of the respective institution or organisation.
GATE 2027 Exam Schedule
The GATE 2027 examination is scheduled to be conducted over three weekends:
- February 6 and 7, 2027
- February 13 and 14, 2027
- February 20 and 21, 2027
The results are scheduled to be announced on March 19, 2027.
GATE 2027 Registration: Apply Before September 27
With the September 27, 2026 deadline approaching, eligible candidates who intend to appear for GATE 2027 should complete their applications during the regular registration period to avoid the additional late fee.
