GATE Previous Year Cut-off: CS, Environmental Science at 30 Marks; Six papers touched 40
The GATE qualifying cut-off score may just be one of the scores on your result sheet, but for prospective PG students, it is an important first filter. New official subject wise data for GATE 2026 reveals that a number of papers need significantly higher cut-off scores than the minimum of 25 marks.
For the 2026 session, the cut-off for the General category for Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) and Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) was 30 marks. On the other hand, Architecture and Planning, Ecology and Evolution, Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences - English, and Humanities and Social Sciences - Sociology all had 40 marks as the upper limit. This also clears up a number that gets shared a lot: 6, not 5, GATE 2026 papers had a General category cut-off of 40 marks.

GATE CS Cut-off: 30 Marks
For the 2026 session, the General category cut-off for CS was 30 marks, whereas it was 27 marks for OBC-NCL/EWS, and 20 marks for SC/ST/PwD. Regarding numbers, CS was one of the more popular papers, with a registration number of 2,59,922 and an appearance number of 2,11,020 for the 2026 session.
Considering the 2025 session, the cut-off for the General category in CS was 29.2 marks. For the 2026 session, it was 30 marks.
GATE Environmental Science Cut-off
General category candidates for Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) had a writing (computation) cut-off of 30 in GATE 2026. Cut-offs for OBC-NCL/EWS, SC/ST/PwD categories were at 27, 20 and 20, respectively.
A substantial rise is evident from the previous year, when the writing cut-off for the General category ES was 26.1.
Which GATE Papers had a 40 Cut-off?
As per the GATE formula, the maximum permissible cut-off is 40 marks. Out of 28 GATE papers, 6 had a cut-off of 40 in GATE 2026:
- Architecture and Planning – 40
- Ecology and Evolution – 40
- Metallurgical Engineering – 40
- Petroleum Engineering – 40
- HSS – English – 40
- HSS – Sociology – 40
For these papers, the OBC-NCL/EWS cut-off was 36 marks, while SC/ST/PwD candidates had a qualifying cut-off of 26.6 marks.
GATE Cut-off is not the Same as Admission Cut-off
The distinction is important. Qualifying GATE marks will not get admission to IITs, NITs or other institutions. The GATE 2026 organising institute clearly indicates that qualification of GATE examination will not get admission, a scholarship or a PSU job. The merit of each institution will decide the admission.
Therefore, clearing 30 marks in CS means qualification of the candidate; 30 marks will not be sufficient for admission in a preferred PG program.
How GATE Qualifying Cut-offs Are Decided
GATE exam cut-offs are determined based on the performance of candidates for each paper. The qualifying mark for the General category for GATE 2026 has been set at max(25, min(40, μ + σ)). Here, μ and σ are the mean and standard deviation, respectively, calculated from the marks obtained by the applicants. This is the reason why cut-offs for different papers differ very significantly. The marks are not evaluated based on a fixed minimum qualifying score across different subjects.
Final Thoughts
This year's GATE cut-offs also explained how individual papers can differ from one another. Environmental Science and CS were both at 30, while 6 of the papers reached the upper qualifying score of 40. Candidates should not consider the cut-offs the qualifying score. IIT or NIT aspirants should focus beyond simply clearing GATE. Qualifying the exam is merely the first step. Your competitive score determines how far you can move from the first step.
