GATE Registration 2027 Will Begin Tomorrow: What Candidates Should Know

New Delhi: The wait is almost over for GATE 2027 aspirants. IIT Madras will commence the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) registration from tomorrow onwards, i.e., August 14, 2026, giving candidates almost a month to fill out their registrations before the final date. As confirmed on the official GATE 2027 website, registrations will be open until September 21, 2026, without a late fee. Candidates who register after that deadline will have to pay the late fee and will be able to register until September 30, 2026.

One important point to note before the registrations start: registration on the GOAPS portal is compulsory for all Indian citizens and will be completed through DigiLocker. IIT Madras also states that for all details such as name, date of birth, email, mobile, address, and image, the verified data from DigiLocker will be utilised.

GATE 2027 Documents Required

IIT Madras has communicated which documents all candidates will be required to have ready before accessing the application portal. These are:

  • A recent good quality photograph
  • An image of the signed signature
  • A valid photo ID scanned
  • SC/ST certificate
  • UDID/PwD certificate
  • Dyslexic certificate

Related annexures for compensatory time and scribe, where applicable. Keep in mind that during the registration process, you may be prompted to take a live photograph. This requires access to a computer with a webcam or a phone with a camera with at least 5 MP.

For Indian candidates, the following photo IDs will be accepted: Aadhaar-UID, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID and Driving Licence. The same ID must be presented in original at the examination center. There is a distinction: in particular, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates do not need to upload their category certificates, while SC/ST candidates need to provide the certificates in order to claim the concession.

Photograph and Signature Requirements

The photograph should not be a passport-size photo saved on the phone. IIT Madras states that the photograph must be colour, with a white background, with a clear face, frontal and covering 60-70% of the photograph. The JPEG/JPG file should be between 5 KB and 600 KB, with dimensions between 200×260 and 530×690 pixels.

The signature should be in black or dark blue ink. The dimensions of the file should be between 250×80 and 580×180 pixels, with a size between 3 KB to 300 KB. Digital signatures, signatures in all capitals and signatures consisting of initials only will not be accepted.

GATE 2027 Application Fee

Indian national women/SC/ST/PwD candidates will pay Rs. 1000, while all other Indian/Foreign candidates will pay Rs. 2000, for each application for taking the GATE exam 2027. During the extended application dates, these fees will rise to Rs. 1500 and Rs. 2500 respectively. Candidates choosing to apply for two papers will be required to pay the applicable fees for two papers.

What GATE 2027 Opens Up

GATE is more than just the entrance exam for M.Tech admissions. A valid GATE score can be utilised for admissions to higher degrees including M.Tech and PhD programs, and several PSUs recruit graduates based on their GATE score. However, clearing the GATE exam does not guarantee admission, financial aid, or a job offer with any of the PSUs. That depends on the respective organisation or institute.

Final Thoughts

As registration for GATE 2027 opens on 14th August, there is no advantage to waiting for the portal to be busy. Confirm your DigiLocker account, check name and date of birth alignment with the photo ID, prepare your photograph and signature in the specified format, and put together the category or disability certificate (if applicable). The regular deadline is set for 21st September but it is wise to keep away from the surge fees for GATE aspirants.
