GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

With its name, GATE gives the impression of narrow eligibility criteria, when it actually is much broader. Candidates who are in their third year or beyond at any institute offering a relevant degree are eligible. Some examples of degrees which are relevant to GATE are:

DigiLocker Is Mandatory for Indian Candidates

A new requirement for Indian applicants is to have a DigiLocker registration (access) before applying. According to IIT Madras, applicants are required to have a DigiLocker account (registered and verified) before applying. Information such as name, date of birth, mobile number, email, profile picture, address, and verified ID can be retrieved at this stage. Applicants are required to ensure consistency between their DigiLocker information and their official identification documents.

What Documents Are Required?

The following documents should be ready by applicants:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Recent photo
  • Signature
  • Personal and communication information
  • Parent/guardian information
  • Degree and College information
  • Category certificate, where applicable
  • PwD certificate, where applicable
  • GATE paper choice
  • Examination-city preferences

Candidates must provide their name exactly as it appears on the valid photo ID they will carry to the examination.

GATE 2027 New Paper on Robotics and Automation

GATE 2027 has 30 test papers, including a new paper on Robotics and Automation (RA). Syllabi for GATE papers have been revised by IIT Madras. Also, some sectional paper codes and two-paper combinations of the GATE papers have been changed.

Candidates can select one paper or two papers, but two-paper candidates must choose from the combinations officially permitted by GATE 2027. Both papers are selected through a single application.

How to Apply for GATE 2027

Registration through the official GATE portal:

  • Visit gate2027.iitm.ac.in
  • Open GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).
  • Complete registration using the required personal details.
  • Complete facial registration process
  • Enter academic and examination details
  • Select the GATE paper or permitted two-paper combination
  • Upload the required photograph, signature and documents

GATE 2027 Exam Dates

The computer-based test (CBT) mode of the GATE 2027 exam will be conducted on February 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 2027. Notifications for city allotment are planned for January 4. The date for release to download the admit cards is still not been announced. According to the official notification, the validity of the GATE 2027 score is for 3 years.

What Next for the Aspirants?

The best and safe option is to apply before the last date which is September 27. Waiting for the last moment serves no good purpose since DigiLocker verification and submission of documents and payment will also have to be done.

Aspirants are advised to go through GATE 2027's revised syllabus and check the combinations of the two papers permitted, before finalizing the paper. IIT Madras has specified modification in the syllabus and combinations of GATE 2027 papers.

Final Thoughts

GATE 2027 registration is now active; IIT Madras has activated the GOAPS application process on August 27, 2026. Candidates have until September 27 without a late fee, while applications remain available until October 5 with the late fee.

This year's registration is noted for two things that should not be missed by candidates; DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals, and Robotics and Automation is a new GATE paper.
