At the XII th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of India as the BRICS President for 2026, the Union Minister of Environment, Bhupender Yadav and other ministers of the BRICS nations officially launched four knowledge compendiums. The documents were developed by the Environment Working Group of BRICS to promote sustainable living, indigenous knowledge, and innovative technologies in all member states.
Knowledge Compendium on Sustainable Lifestyles and Education
The first compendium discusses ways member nations are promoting sustainable lifestyles and methods of ecological education, including:
- Mission LiFE Contribution: India’s citizen-based initiatives such as Mission LiFE and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam
- Behavioral Change: Encouraging younger generations and local communities to adopt sustainable consumption patterns
- Education: Integrating environmental-friendly practices and knowledge into school and higher-education curriculums
Knowledge Compendium on Integrated Wildfire Management and Forest Safety
The second knowledge document covers wildfire management and forest safety, including the exchange of indigenous and scientific knowledge for building disaster-resilient societies in member states:
- Early Warning: Creating early warning communication networks in forested regions
- Community-based Response: Involving local forest-dwelling communities and youth in wildfire response and management
- Capacity Development: Conducting joint training programs in wildfire management for scientists and researchers
Knowledge Compendium on Landscape Greening and Restoration
The Environment Ministers also launched the third compendium on landscape-level greening and restoration, which shares the member states’ experiences on restoring ecosystems and landscapes while also addressing desertification and biodiversity loss:
- Tree Plantation Campaigns: Restoring ecological systems and conserving biodiversity
- Climate Smart: Assisting in adapting climate change responses at the agricultural landscape level
- Policies and Programs: Aligning restoration programs with rural employment generation initiatiative
Compendium on Circular Economy and Waste Management
The final knowledge document provides information on transitioning to a circular economy and managing waste, including India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework with a digital EPR portal. The ministers also noted that sharing digital solutions, technical know-how, and circular economy concepts would help developing countries achieve their developmental goals while conserving the environment.
