IIT Madras Launches Online BS Programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a new Bachelor of Science (BS) in Aeronautics and Space Technology, offered in online mode, to widen access to high-quality aerospace education and align with national priorities in aviation, UAVs, and space manufacturing.

Chennai - IIT Madras has officially announced the launch of its online BS programme in Aeronautics and Space Technology, a skill-based undergraduate degree designed to equip learners with strong foundations in aeronautics, space systems, and engineering analysis. The programme has been introduced to address growing skill gaps in sunrise sectors such as civil aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, and space technologies, while also supporting India’s long-term goals in defence and aerospace manufacturing.

The BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology was formally launched on the IIT Madras campus on 9 February 2026 in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, along with the virtual presence of Dr. D. K. Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Dr. V. Sumantran, former Chairman of IndiGo Airlines, and several other key stakeholders from academia and industry.

The programme is open to anyone who has passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification, including diploma holders, with no requirement of IIT-JEE qualification and no cap on enrolment. Learners can progress at a flexible pace through defined milestones, making the programme suitable for students, working professionals, and those seeking an alternative pathway to an undergraduate engineering qualification. Examinations will be conducted on Sundays through a mix of centre-based and online proctored assessments.

Academically, the programme blends rigorous theoretical instructions with practical exposure. Core courses will be delivered through recorded lectures by expert faculty, supported by the live interactive tutorials and discussion forums. Learners will gain hands-on experience through laboratory courses conducted on the IIT Madras campus, including exposure to advanced facilities such as wind tunnels and mechanical testing labs. At advanced stages, students will work on projects using industry standard tools like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Method (FEM)

Graduate off the program are expected to have strong employment prosts, facts across public sector undertaking, global aerospace Force startups, an engineering analysis companies.Potential employers include organisations in aerospace, manufacturing, defence and energy sectors.The program also prepares students for GATE and higher studies at IITs and IISc, with high-performing learners eligible for further academic progression based on prescribed criteria.
