KOLKATA, March 23— The Postgraduate and Research Department of Computer Science at St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata, has officially launched its highly anticipated flagship technology festival, eXabyte '26. Running from today through March 24, the event has returned with an expanded vision and a fresh set of challenges designed to push the boundaries of interdisciplinary innovation. Widely regarded as one of the city's premier student-led tech gatherings, eXabyte '26 aims to serve as a dynamic platform where emerging talent from diverse academic backgrounds can exchange ideas and test their technical mettle.
The theme for this year's edition is Optimising Horizons, a concept intended to inspire participants to explore new frontiers in technology, creativity, and collaboration. This theme follows the department's previous focus on Connecting the New Normal, which explored how technology served humanity during the height of the global pandemic. As the world moves beyond those challenges, eXabyte 26 looks forward, focusing on the soft power of modernization and the evolution of the digital ecosystem.
The festival was inaugurated with an enlightenment of the vision for the Department of Computer Science, which has historically produced quality professionals for global firms like TCS, IBM, and Deloitte. This year’s event is spearheaded by a dedicated leadership team, including Convenor Srijan Sen and Co-Convenor Debottam Chatterjee, supported by an extensive network of student visionaries. With a curated lineup of 15 varied competitions, eXabyte '26 offers a blend of technical expertise and creative expression. The organizers have categorized the events to cater to everyone from seasoned tech experts to those just starting their journey. The crown jewel of the fest is eXathon, the flagship hackathon conducted in two phases. In the initial online phase, teams submit innovative models based on specific themes. The selected finalists then move to an on-campus finale where they must enhance their projects based on expert feedback before presenting to a panel of judges. Another major addition this year is CheXmate, a strategy-driven chess tournament featuring online prelims in a Swiss league format and an intense on-campus final round. For those who thrive at runtime, Codeplay tests problem-solving abilities and logical thinking in the fields of Data Structures and Algorithms. Participants must collaborate to write clean, optimized code under strict time constraints. Meanwhile, Crypt-X offers a multi-level cryptic challenge where each solved puzzle unlocks the next, rewarding pattern recognition and persistence. Technical minds can also engage with Digibit, a two-stage electronics competition involving theoretical MCQs followed by a circuit design and construction challenge.
Logic-based events remain a staple of eXabyte. Sudo-X challenges participants' concentration and speed with sequential Sudoku puzzles. Cube-X returns as an offline Rubik's Cube solving competition where speed and precision determine who sets the fastest record. For those who prefer physical movement, X-Hunt is a thrilling treasure hunt starting with online prelims and ending in a campus-wide chase to decode clues and complete tasks. The fest recognizes that technology and art are increasingly intertwined. Webbed challenges front-end designers to blend UI/UX skills with technical execution to create visually appealing web pages. Em-bleed provides a space for digital designers to create original posters and GIFs based on specific themes.
Storytelling is highlighted through Byte Tales, an online challenge where contestants must express powerful ideas in exactly 50 words. Photography enthusiasts can participate in Snappit, which focuses on composition and narrative through DSLR or smartphone lenses. Furthermore, Verb-o-War provides an Oxford-style debate platform for those who believe in the power of articulation and persuasive reasoning. Finally, embracing the modern gaming culture, eXcelerate serves as the high-energy competitive gaming arena. Teams battle online, demonstrating coordination and strategic gameplay to prove their dominance.
The sheer scale of eXabyte '26 is made possible by a vast ecosystem of student committees. Beyond the convenors, the Core Committee (CCM) includes Animikh Chowdhury, Lavanya Singh, and Bhaskar Joyti Mitra. The Organizing Committee (OCM) is divided into specialized units:
- Events & Systems: Managed by Diya Konar, Shashank Tiwari, Shitij Bhadra, and Jishnu Chattopadhyay.
- Logistics: Shubhrajyoti Biswas and Sujatra Paul.
- PR & Media: Sourashis Nath, Aditi Das (PR), and the photography/videography teams led by Chayan Pal and Arghya Mukherjee.

The festival is supported by a range of industry leaders who act as the elixir of the event. Dataspace Security Pvt. Ltd., a fast-growing cybersecurity company with operations in Kolkata and Dubai, is a primary partner. Their training wing, Dataspace Academy, is heavily involved in developing impactful manpower in security and information systems. Another major technical partner is the ISOEH (Indian School of Ethical Hacking), which provides training and certification in cybersecurity. The hospitality and lifestyle side of the fest is bolstered by Foods & Inns and the Baked Canvas, which helps create special cake moments for participants. Creonimus Technology Solutions LLP (Presto) provides 3D printing and scanning support, showcasing the next generation of gift and manufacturing technology. Educational support is provided by EduAims, a consultancy specializing in study abroad programs, while Kiran Pro-Con Pvt. Ltd. also joins the sponsor lineup.
In conjunction with the fest, the department is also celebrating the launch of X-Cryptus Vol. IV, the annual departmental magazine. Principal Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, noted that this publication is a culmination of technological prowess and literary finesse. The magazine features articles on emerging trends such as DARQ technology (Distributed Ledger, AI, Extended Reality, and Quantum Computing) and its role in shaping a post-digital era.
The Department of Computer Science at St. Xavier’s continues to be a hub for research, with students publishing papers in journals like IEEE and Springer on topics ranging from Deep Learning for Sign Language Translation to Real-time Pothole Detection. This academic rigor provides the foundation for eXabyte '26, ensuring that the fest is not just a celebration, but a serious exploration of the future of tech.
As eXabyte '26 progresses through its second day, the organizers invite all students to be part of this vibrant mix of learning and competition, reinforcing the college's reputation as a hub for emerging talent in Kolkata.
