Education for All: Top Scholarships for Poor Students in India
For students in the poor or Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in 2026, India has several healthy "Complete Education" scholarship pipelines that cover the whole lot from school (Class 9) through to PhD. The most successful way to secure funding is through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), which serves as a single window for the majority of central schemes.
School Level (Classes 9-12)
PM YASASVI: It is a 2026 flagship scheme. It provides ₹75,000 per year for Class 9 and ₹125,000 per year for Class 11. It is meant to meet the tuition, books, and costs of meritorious students who are of EBC (Economically Backward Class) and OBC backgrounds.
E.g., NMMS (National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship): Scholarships worth 12,000/year are given to those students whose family income is below 3.5 Lakh, so they do not have to drop out of school after Class 8.
Higher Education (Graduation & Post-Graduation)
- PM-USP (Uchchatar Shiksha Protsahan): Focuses on the 20th percentile of Class 12 students. It offers:
- The cost of Graduation is 12,000/year.
- ₹20,000/year Post-Graduate.
- Income limit: ₹4.5 Lakh per annum.
- Post-Matric Scholarships: It is provided to the SC, ST, and OBC students whose family income is usually less than 2.5 Lakh. These include the majority of non-refundable fees, and include a monthly maintenance allowance.
Professional & Technical Courses (B.Tech, Medical, etc.)
- NSP Top Class Education Scheme: For students who pass exams such as JEE or NEET and are admitted to leading institutes (IITs, NITs, IIMs). Such scholarships may include full tuition fees and non-refundable fees (up to 2 Lakh in the private and more than 3.7 Lakh in individual aviation/flight clubs) and a living allowance of 3,000/month
- AICTE Pragati: This scholarship is offered to girls pursuing technical degree or diploma courses, with 50,000 as an annual grant that is paid per year of study.

Specialized & State Schemes
State-Specific Portals: There are many states that have their own free-ship cards. Indicatively, Karnataka has the SSP portal and Delhi the Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Pratibha Yojana (up to ₹10,000 to senior school students). Study Abroad: In case you are an SC/ST student seeking a master's/PhD in a foreign country, the National Overseas Scholarship can offer you a total subsidy of ₹20 Lakh.
How to Apply Successfully:
- Get your Income Certificate ready: Most of these require a valid certificate showing income below ₹1.0 Lakh to ₹4.5 Lakh (depending on the scheme).
- Link Aadhaar to Bank: All 2026 scholarships use DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). If your bank account isn't Aadhaar-seeded, the payment will fail.
- One Scheme Rule: You generally cannot hold two government scholarships at once. Choose the one that offers the highest benefit.
