DU Allows Colleges To Hire Faculty Without A Regular Principal, Claiming That This Is In The Interest Of Students

The 32 colleges of the Delhi University have been advised that they are free to choose instructors even if they lack a "formal principal."

New Delhi: In a departure from its earlier directive to its 32 colleges not to make new appointments without a permanent head teacher, the Delhi University has advised them that they are free to appoint teachers even if they do not have a "regular principle". In a notification dated August 31, DU claimed that, "in the greater interest of the students," it had "evaluated" its prior decision.
In a letter dated May 18 to the college governing bodies, the assistant registrar of the university stated that until they have a permanent principle, appointments to teaching and non-teaching positions should not be permitted on a contract, ad hoc, or even regular basis.
After then, Yogesh Singh, the vice chancellor, received a letter from seven faculty members of DU's Academics for Action and Development pleading with him to "consider" the suspension. Teachers, including members of the academic council and administrative council, had claimed that because numerous colleges were already understaffed, the decision would have a negative impact on how well instruction was delivered.
They had argued that the delay in principal permanent appointments caused by unrelated issues could not harm education.
"It has now been decided that the College(s)/Institution(s), wherever the Acting/Officiating Principal(s) are in position, may go ahead and advertise the teaching jobs solely in various disciplines in the bigger interests of the students," DU stated in the new notification released a few days ago.
