JMI's Dr. Hasan Raja Naqvi Secures Prestigious Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship

The Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship is one of the most prestigious exchange programs promoting mutual understanding, scholarly cooperation, and knowledge sharing between India and the United States.

New Delhi : Dr. Hasan Raja Naqvi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship for the year 2026-2027. This distinguished fellowship will enable him to undertake advanced collaborative research in the United States for a period of nine months. The Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship is one of the most prestigious exchange programs promoting mutual understanding, scholarly cooperation, and knowledge sharing between India and the United States.

As part of the fellowship, Dr. Naqvi will collaborate with eminent scholars Dr. Farid Peiravian and Prof. Christopher Burke from University of Illinois, Chicago on an important interdisciplinary research project titled “From Climate Data to Resilience: Geospatial Artificial Intelligence Approaches to Flood Risk and Adaptation Planning for Periyar, India, and Upper Illinois, USA, Catchments”. The research focuses on applying advanced Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), climate data analytics, and spatial decision-support systems to assess flood risk and develop adaptation strategies for two important river catchments. This international collaboration seeks to enhance scientific understanding of climate-induced flood hazards, improve resilience planning, and support sustainable watershed management in vulnerable regions. The project is expected to generate valuable insights for policymakers, planners, and disaster management agencies in both countries.

Dr. Naqvi completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Geography from CCSU, Meerut and obtained his PhD degree in 2013 from the department of Geography, JMI. He has published more than 50 articles in international and national journals. Moreover, he has also presented research work in India and abroad such as the USA, France, Ethiopia, China and Taiwan. He has successfully completed an Indo-Taiwan joint research project as PI, funded by ICSSR and is pursuing other research projects funded by DST and CWBC. Additionally, Dr. Naqvi was also awarded the Scientific High Level Visiting Fellowship (SSHN) for a short research trip to France in 2024. His achievement reflects academic excellence and commitment to impactful research in physical geography, natural hazards, climate resilience, air pollution and geospatial technologies. It also highlights the growing global recognition of Jamia Millia Islamia as a leading university for innovative research and international academic engagement.

The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Mazhar Asif, along with the Registrar, JMI, Prof. Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, and the Dean of Students’ Welfare, Prof. Neelofer Afzal extended their heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Naqvi on being awarded the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship. They felicitated him with a ceremonial stole in recognition of this distinguished achievement, expressing immense pride in his accomplishment. The university leadership also assured full administrative and institutional support for his academic engagement abroad and conveyed their best wishes for his continued success and impactful contributions in future endeavours.
