New Delhi: The Delhi government has officially greenlit a massive construction project for a brand new campus of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi. This huge update came after a high-level meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee. The meeting was headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, where they cleared the budget for this work. According to the official sources, the government is going to spend a huge amount of money, which is nearly 1,668 crore rupees, on this project. This step is being called a major move for improving the college facilities in the capital city.
The main objective behind this big decision is to provide better space and the latest facilities for the students who want to do higher studies. Right now, the university operates from small spaces like Kashmere Gate and Karampura, where space is always a big problem. Students often complain about crowded classrooms and less space for sports. So, this new land in North Delhi's Dheerpur area will change everything completely. The Public Works Department will be handling all the building work from now onwards because the clearance has already been given by the government.
Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma and Education Minister Ashish Sood were also present in that meeting, along with other top government officers. They all agreed that the building work should start as soon as possible so that the pressure on the old campuses can be reduced. The government thinks that education is the main foundation for any state to grow, so they are putting a lot of money into this. People are saying that this new step will give a big relief to those who want to take admission in this popular university but fail because of the low number of seats.
Campus Land Layout and Student Capacity :
When we look at the size of this project, it is really huge because it is spread across nearly 20 hectares of land. If we calculate it in acres, it is around 50 acres of total land, which is located near Gandhi Vihar on the outer ring road. The whole area is very big, and things do not look small here at all. The university has planned to develop this area in different parts so that some buildings can start working quickly. The final capacity of this whole campus will be to handle around 8,000 students at a single time.
But for the start, the government will focus on the first phase only. In this first phase, they are creating sitting spaces and classrooms for about 5,400 students. This means thousands of youth from Delhi and nearby states will get a chance to study in a brand new environment. Currently, Ambedkar University Delhi have a very high cutoff list because seats are limited, but after this building becomes ready, things will become much easier for everyone.
The campus location is also very interesting because it is right next to the Dheerpur Wetlands. These wetlands are spread over 65 acres and is looked after by the university's own environment center along with the Delhi Development Authority. Because of this, the students will get a very fresh and green atmosphere which is very rare to find in a crowded city like Delhi. The design of the campus shows that there will be separate areas for different departments, so that the crowd inside the campus remain managed.
Campus Infrastructure and Student Amenities :
The facilities that are being planned for the Dheerpur campus are completely modern and world-class. One of the biggest problems for outside students in Delhi is finding a safe place to stay. To solve this issue, the government has included a big hostel block inside the main plan. This hostel will provide accommodation to 840 students easily, so that boys and girls from other states does not have to pay heavy rent outside in private colonies. Also, there will be 256 residential quarters for the faculty and staff members so they can stay near the students.
Apart from the living space, a grand auditorium will also be built, which will have a seating capacity of 2,500 people at once. This will be used for big college functions, theater, and international seminars. Usually, the university has to book outside halls for their convocation, but now they can do it inside their own campus. A very large central library is also part of this master plan which will hold thousands of books and online computers for research work.
For health and fun, the project will include multiple sports facilities, both for indoor games and outdoor sports. There will be dedicated tracks for running, grounds for playing football, and small courts for badminton. A health center, a utility shopping complex, and a crèche for the children of working mothers are also going to be built. These things ensure that the students get everything inside the boundary walls, and they don't have to run outside on the busy roads for small needs.
Sustainable Design and Green Initiatives :
A very special thing about this upcoming Dheerpur campus is that it will be an eco-friendly project. The Delhi government has decided that this building will follow the GRIHA 5-Star standards strictly. For those who do not know, GRIHA is the rating system in India for green buildings, which checks how environmentally friendly a construction is. The university want to set an example for other institutes by making this entire area sustainable and clean.
To achieve this goal, the engineers will install advanced renewable energy systems. The roof of almost every academic block will have solar panels to generate electricity from sunlight. They are also planning to use geothermal energy which is a very new technology for cooling and heating purposes inside the rooms. This will help in reducing the electricity bills of the college by a very big margin.
Water conservation measures are also given a lot of priority in this plan. Since the campus is close to the wetlands, they will build large rainwater harvesting systems to save every drop of rain. There will be advanced wastewater recycling plants too, which means the dirty water from washrooms and kitchens will be treated and reused for watering the college gardens and flushing systems. This type of planning shows that the government are not just creating regular concrete buildings, but they are thinking about the future of the environment too.
Academic Expansion and Implementation Plan :
The new campus will not just bring big buildings, but it will also bring many new courses and research departments. In the first phase of implementation, the university have decided to move seven of its major schools to Dheerpur. This includes the School of Undergraduate Studies, the School of Liberal Studies, and the School of Development Studies. Other important departments like Human Ecology, Design, Culture & Creative Expressions, and Vocational Studies will also shift here.
Along with these schools, new centers for specialized research will also start working. There will be a Center for Community Knowledge, an Incubation Center for helping students start their own businesses, and a Center for Future Studies. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that their main target is not just to build walls, but to create a place where research and new ideas can grow. This will help the students of Delhi to prepare themselves for future job opportunities globally.
The project has already received its main necessary permissions from the Delhi Urban Art Commission and the Delhi Fire Service. This means that legal hurdles does not exist anymore and the actual work can start on the ground without any delay. The local residents of North Delhi are also very happy with this news because the entry of a top university always improves the economy, roads, and transport systems of the surrounding localities. Once completed, this place will certainly become a major hub for higher learning in the country
