New Delhi: In a major political development, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned from his post following days of nationwide protests over the alleged irregularities surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 examination. In his statement, the former minister reflected on his decades-long public life, stating that he has devoted more than forty years to improving education, empowering teachers, and supporting students. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he thanked him for the opportunity to serve the nation and lead the Ministry of Education during a transformative period.
Response to the NEET-UG 2026 Controversy
Addressing the controversy directly, Mr. Pradhan acknowledged that irregularities had surfaced in the NEET-UG examination conducted on May 3, 2026.
He noted that the Government acted immediately after the allegations emerged by:
- Handing over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
- Cancelling the affected examination.
- Announcing a fresh examination.
- Deciding to introduce Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for future NEET-UG examinations beginning next year.
According to Mr. Pradhan, the Government's primary focus throughout the crisis remained ensuring that the academic future of more than 20 lakh students was protected. He credited the successful conduct of the re-examination on June 21, 2026 to coordinated efforts between the Central Government, state governments, district administrations, students, and parents.
"I Took Full Responsibility"
The former Education Minister asserted that he accepted responsibility for the situation from the very beginning and remained committed to ensuring that deserving students were not deprived of opportunities because of criminal activities linked to the alleged "exam mafia."
He said the Government worked to ensure that honest and hardworking candidates received justice, adding that the declaration of NEET-UG results on July 16, 2026 enabled many talented students, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds, to secure admission opportunities.
However, he also expressed disappointment that, according to him, certain individuals holding responsible positions continued to spread confusion and create obstacles during the process, causing unnecessary anxiety among students.
Resignation in the Interest of Students
Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, Mr. Pradhan said the events of recent days had deeply saddened him. He maintained that the issue was never about protecting his position but about safeguarding the interests of students and preserving national unity.
He stated that protests taking place at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere in the country created circumstances where anti-national elements could exploit public unrest. To prevent prolonged uncertainty, avoid legal complications affecting students, and allow young aspirants to return to their studies, he decided to submit his resignation to the Prime Minister.
According to his statement, his objective was to ensure that students could focus on their education without becoming entangled in prolonged political and legal disputes.
