New Delhi — In a recent tweet, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has questioned the opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Tamil Nadu, urging political leaders to place the interests of students above political agendas. The NEP, which has been the subject of considerable debate in the state, promotes education in regional languages, including Tamil, and introduces reforms aimed at making the Indian education system more holistic and inclusive.
Pradhan’s tweet posed several direct questions to those opposing the NEP’s implementation in Tamil Nadu:
1. Are you opposing education in the mother tongue, including Tamil?
2. Are you opposing the conduct of exams in Indian languages, including Tamil?
3. Are you opposing the creation of textbooks and content in Indian languages, including Tamil?
4. Are you opposed to the holistic, multi-disciplinary, equitable, futuristic, and inclusive framework of NEP?
He emphasized that the NEP 2020 was formulated after extensive consultations with a wide range of stakeholders and reflects the collective wisdom of the people of India. Highlighting that healthy competition among states is welcome in a democracy, Pradhan cautioned against pitting states against each other for political gains, as it goes against the spirit of the Constitution and a unified India.
"I urge you to prioritize the interests of the students of Tamil Nadu over your political gains and implement NEP," Pradhan added in his tweet.
The NEP’s push for mother-tongue-based education, conducting exams in regional languages, and creating textbooks in languages like Tamil has been a contentious issue in Tamil Nadu, where the political discourse has often focused on preserving the state’s linguistic identity. Pradhan’s statement underscores the importance of the policy’s student-centric approach and calls for a balanced perspective in implementing reforms that benefit students across the country.
As the NEP debate continues in Tamil Nadu, Pradhan’s message highlights the need for thoughtful dialogue and cooperation to ensure that the future of education in the state aligns with both national priorities and local needs.
