New Delhi, June 26: Today, Delhi's Education Minister, Shri Ashish Sood, witnessed the historic tripartite hosting agreement between the Government of NCT of Delhi, School Games Federation of India (SGFI), and the International School Sport Federation (ISF) to host the ISF World School Wrestling Championship and the ISF World School Badminton Championship in 2027 in Delhi. While addressing the media, Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood mentioned that the Delhi Government, in association with SGFI and ISF, signed the MoU to host these world-renowned school sports events. The school games will have Wrestling and Badminton as two events and will witness the participation of over 1,000 athletes from more than 50 countries.
He mentioned that this agreement will uplift the young sports persons of Delhi and improve their performances by providing them exposure to world-class sports facilities, and will strengthen the sports ecosystem of Delhi. It will unlock Delhi's potential and provide an opportunity to host various national and international sports events in the future. The work to conduct the events will commence immediately.
The Minister added that, with this agreement, Delhi will host the ISF World School Championships for the first time, and this mega event will engage students and young sportspersons, coaches, and sports delegates across the world.
Shri Sood also noted that the championships will add new energy to Prime Minister Modi's concepts of 'Khelo India' and 'Fit India.' He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Government is making earnest efforts to build best-in-the-class sporting infrastructure and position the National Capital as the premier venue for International Sporting events. He expressed hope that the Delhi Government will excellently host this prestigious championship.
The Education Minister also explained that Delhi will organize the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in July 2026 and that the hosting of the ISF World School Championships in 2027 will enhance the global sporting profile of Delhi. The championships will allow Indian school athletes to compete internationally, and help build a sporting culture in India, in along with the rest of the initiatives and efforts in this direction, to help India achieve its ambition of becoming a sporting superpower.
