Delhi Govt Launches Study to Curb School Dropouts, Improve Teaching Standards

SCERT-led research explores reasons behind dropouts, role of PM POSHAN, and teacher adaptability in a tech-driven era

New Delhi. : In a significant move to strengthen public education, the Delhi government has initiated an in-depth research programme to understand the root causes of student dropouts and enhance teacher effectiveness. The project, led by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), aims to ensure that every child not only stays in school but thrives academically and emotionally.

As part of the initiative, SCERT is conducting a series of priority research studies focused on identifying the key factors behind student disengagement. A major aspect under review is the impact of student entitlements under the Right to Education (RTE) Act — particularly the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) scheme, which provides daily hot meals to children in government and aided schools. Initial findings suggest that this nutrition scheme plays a vital role in improving classroom attendance.

Another important focus of the research is how school principals use data on enrolment, attendance, and dropout trends to improve school functioning. SCERT is evaluating how leadership training programmes are equipping school heads with the tools to make data-informed decisions.

Adapting to the Digital Age
The study also dives into the evolving role of teachers in an era increasingly shaped by digital technologies and artificial intelligence. Researchers are assessing how educators can remain relevant, impactful, and future-ready. A parallel investigation is exploring new approaches to evaluating and enhancing teacher performance.

To gain a well-rounded understanding, the project will include insights from not just educators and school administrators, but also students and parents. This holistic approach is expected to offer actionable recommendations for reducing dropouts and elevating the quality of education across Delhi.

This comprehensive research underscores the Delhi government’s commitment to creating an inclusive, responsive, and modern public education system.
