Delhi Schools to Introduce Child Safety Parent-Teacher Meetings on July 25
In an innovative initiative to enhance child safety beyond the classroom, the Delhi Government has declared that the upcoming Abhibhavak Shikshak Samvaad on July 25, 2026, will be entirely focused on Child Safety and Protection. This program will be the first of its kind and will mark the conclusion of Child Safety Month. For the entire month of July, schools in the National Capital will focus on building collaborations with parents to address issues about the safety and well-being of children.
The initiative will be applied to Government Schools, Government Aided Schools, Private Recognized Schools, MCD Schools, NDMC Schools and Delhi Cantonment Board Schools and will quickly become one of the largest, coordinated parent-school engagement programs on child safety in Delhi.
A Unique Method Involving Child Safety at Schools
Delhi's Education Minister, Shri Ashish Sood, announced the initiative and stated that the safety of children comes before anything else.
"Children's safety is the priority and should be above everything else. Schools and parents need to work together to ensure the child feels safe and has the freedom to express themselves. Education holds no value when the child is frightened in the school," he stated.
The minister also opined that child safety should not be restricted to the classroom, but become part of the awareness programs. Rather, it should be a continuous joint venture of the parents and the teachers, the two strongest groups in the child's life.
When Is the Event Scheduled?
The Abhibhavak Shikshak Samvaad is occurring on July 25, 2026, in three locations in Delhi during the two sessions outlined below:
- Session 1 (General Shift Schools): 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
- Session 2 (Evening Shift Schools): 2 PM - 6 PM
Schools must have organized sessions with parents for the full day.
What Will Parents and Teachers Talk About?
This interaction is not a typical parent-teacher meeting where the focus is on the academic progress of the student. The focus of this interaction is on the protection and wellness of the child.
The topics teachers will engage parents on include:
- Touch - Safe and Unsafe
- The "No-Go-Tell" rule
- Body Safety
- The POCSO Act, 2012
- Cyberbullying
- Responsible Digital Citizenship
- Emotional Distress
- Bullying and Harassment
- The School Child Protection Committee
- Child Protection reporting concerns
- Communication between Parents and Children
Each class teacher will have a meeting with parents on the individual child to cover the child's development and safety.
How Are Schools Helping Make this Mandatory for Parents?
To make this mandatory for parents, the Directorate of Education has ordered schools to do the following:
- Keep a record of attendance.
- Make phone calls, send messages and letters to the parents who did not attend.
- Organize additional meetings if needed.
- Structure the meetings to welcome parents.
Directors of Education will make visits to Delhi schools to see how this is being implemented.
It is a Shared Responsibility
Elaborating on the greater aim of the initiative, Shri Ashish Sood said:
“Establishing secure schools is not solely in the hands of the teachers. Responsibility is shared between schools, parents, and the community. When safety awareness begins in the home and continues in the school, every child is empowered and is made strong and safe and is instilled with confidence."
The initiative indicates the recognition and understanding that the safety of children is not just about physical safety, but also emotional safety, safety in the digital world, and the provision of supportive and open communication between families and schools.
Significance of This Initiative
As children are spending more time in classrooms and the cyberspace, schools are expanding their roles from being mere educational institutions to being all-round developmental centers. It is well recognized that safety awareness, emotional safety, and responsible use of the digital world of children, if taught early, enable children to identify risks, seek assistance, and empower them to carry out actions with confidence.
The objective of the Delhi Government in dedicating a complete city-wide Parent-Teacher Meeting to child protection is to generate safety awareness in the community in a preventive manner, rather than to wait and take action after the threat has occurred. The initiative further aims to strengthen the safety of schools in relation to the existing child protection legislation in the country.
Final Thoughts
The Abhibhavak Shikshak Samvaad on July 25 will mark the beginning of a novel opportunity for parents, schools, and communities to work together to keep children safe. Traditional parent-school interactions revolve around report cards and academic performance. This new initiative places engagement around the safety and emotional well-being of children, as well as their digital responsibility. If this initiative is adopted successfully in the other participating schools, it will serve as the first attempt to protect children via the engagement of parents, educators, and the community as a whole.
