Central University of Haryana’s Department of Sociology Strengthens Academic Culture Through Thursday Colloquium

Mahendragarh, November 4, 2025:  The Department of Sociology at the Central University of Haryana (CUH) continues to nurture its tradition of academic excellence through the Thursday Colloquium—an interactive platform aimed at fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, critical debate, and research innovation among students and scholars.

Head of the Department, Dr. T. Longkoi Khiamniungan, emphasized that the colloquium has become a hallmark of the department’s intellectual vibrancy. “Such engagements strengthen our students’ academic foundations and broaden their perspectives. Our goal is to make the Department of Sociology one of the most dynamic academic spaces in the country,” she stated.

Dr. Khiamniungan expressed her gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar for his continuous encouragement and visionary leadership. His emphasis on intellectual engagement, student-centric initiatives, and interdisciplinary research has been instrumental in sustaining the Thursday Colloquium as a flagship academic event.

Intellectually Stimulating Sessions Mark the Semester

This semester, the colloquium hosted three distinguished scholars whose sessions reflected the initiative’s interdisciplinary ethos:

  • Dr. Suraj Beri (Nagaland University) offered an analytical exploration of Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, habitus, and classificatory struggles, connecting sociological theory with real-world social transformations and inequalities.
  • Dr. Pooja Sharma (Hull York Medical School, United Kingdom) delved into Medical Anthropology, examining how global capitalism, culture, and political economy shape disease, suffering, and health inequities. Her insights on cancer ethnographies and structural violence highlighted the need for cross-disciplinary inquiry.
  • Dr. Vinay Gupta (District Civil Hospital, Kaithal) presented a thought-provoking session titled “The Digital Mind Trap: How A.I. Shapes and Shakes Our Mental Health.” He discussed technostress, digital loneliness, and algorithmic influence, raising awareness about the psychological implications of artificial intelligence.

A Platform for Dialogue, Debate, and Discovery

Each session of the Thursday Colloquium successfully brought together theory, empirical research, technology, and public health, creating a vibrant space for critical engagement. The active participation of MA students, research scholars, and faculty members reaffirmed the department’s commitment to collaborative learning and academic dialogue.

The initiative is coordinated by Tanvi Bhati, under the leadership of Dr. Khiamniungan, with active contributions from Dr. Reema Gill, Dr. Yudhvir, Dr. Kashmira, and Sh. Som Chand.

As a continuing tradition, the Department of Sociology plans to organize weekly sessions featuring eminent scholars and researchers in the coming months, further strengthening CUH’s reputation as a hub of interdisciplinary education and academic innovation.
