Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Inaugurates 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026 at Thyagaraj Stadium

Commencing at Thyagaraj Stadium, New Delhi, the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026 was ceremonially opened by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Education and Sports Minister Ashish Sood expressed in his address to Commonwealth athletes that sports transcends national boundaries, and the Government of Delhi speaks through action by channeling resources to sports, especially in terms of sports infrastructure, devoted youth, and growing opportunities to potential athletes.

New Delhi now has a place on the international sports stage with the commencement of the 2026 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, being held at the Thyagaraj Stadium with participation of officials, athletes and delegates of the Commonwealth.

The championships were inaugurated by Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi. The commencement of one of the premier Table Tennis Championships of the Commonwealth was supported by Ashish Sood, the Minister for Education and Sports of Delhi, senior members of the organizing committee, officials of the Table Tennis Federation, and athletes of the Commonwealth.

 

Ashish Sood quoted, “Sports Unite Beyond Borders”

Seeking to welcome the athletes and officials from the numerous nations, Education and Sports Minister Ashish Sood was of the opinion that Sports is the language that unites all and breaks every barrier of language, culture, and geography.

As per the Minister, Sport is characterized by discipline, courage, and respect, along with fair play. He then focused on the sport of Table Tennis, and mentioned that it is a sport which is fast, and requires a player to possess the ability to decide in a fraction of a second, and requires mental toughness and concentration, along with discipline, and hence provides a platform to youth to develop character as well as sport. He then went on to mention that one earns victory not only through physical prowess, but also through determination, strategic play, and consistency.

 

Education and Sports Go Hand in Hand

Sri. Ashish Sood emphasized that education and athletics should be viewed as complementary. He stated that the Delhi Government has a broader vision for youth development. He said that education and athletics should not be viewed as competing priorities.

Mr. Sood stated that classrooms assist students in developing their knowledge and analytical skills, while sports fields assist in developing extracurricular skills such as teamwork, dedication, leadership, resilience, and respect.

He stated that both sports and education assist in developing the future leaders of the nation.

 

Thousands of Delhi School Students Watch International Championship

An important and unique aspect of this championship is that thousands of school students are spectators. Mr. Sood explained that students from across all Delhi schools were invited so that they could watch international competitions and see elite sports players compete.

He stated that young spectators were future Commonwealth champions, possibly Olympic medal winners, and who knows, future ambassadors of Indian sports. He stated that watching athletes and champions perform sports inspires people.

 

Delhi Government Providing Sports Opportunities and Infrastructure

Mr. Sood stated that the Delhi Government is making all possible efforts so that no talented sports children are left behind due to lack of resources and support.

He stated that the past year has seen many changes in the sports support system in Delhi. One of the flagship initiatives, the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh, witnessed participation from more than 25,000 athletes. Inspired by the success, the Government aims to have nearly 40,000 participants in the next Mahakumbh, covering 14 different sports.

 

Strengthened Global Friendships

Regarding the importance of international sports competitions, Shri Sood said winning medals is not what the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships are all about.

He called them arenas for strengthening friendships, trust, and cultural appreciation between the nations competing. Respecting your opponents, pride in your country’s representation, and the formation of lasting relationships through sport are the legacies of international competitions, he said.

He asked the competing sportsmen and women to do so confidently, to hold the highest level of sportsmanship, and to remember that the representation of their country is a great honor.

 

Delhi As a Global Sporting Venue

The Minister also thanked the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation, the Table Tennis Federation of India, the Organising Committee of the Championships, and the many volunteers and officials for the successful hosting of the Championships.

He said that the ability to host an event of this high international order is a promise and further strengthens the ability of Delhi to host world-class sports events, and strengthens the developing international competitive sports position of India.
