Tripura Assures College Admission for All Class 12 Pass Students Amid Protests

Minister Kishor Barman says over 33,000 seats available for 24,000 qualified students; warns not all may get preferred subjects or colleges.

Tripura’s Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman has assured that every student who passed the Class 12 state board examination will be granted admission to government degree colleges in the state. His statement comes amid ongoing protests and controversies surrounding the undergraduate admission process.

Barman’s assurance followed student demonstrations at Ramthakur Degree College in Agartala, where allegations surfaced that a professor had illegally admitted over 100 students using forged documents. The professor has since been suspended. The controversy raised concerns about fair access to higher education, prompting the government to step in.

“I assure the students who have cleared the higher secondary examinations that they will get admission to government degree colleges,” said Barman, adding, “but subjects and colleges may not be of their choice.”

Adequate Seats, But High Demand for Popular Courses

According to the minister, over 24,000 students have cleared the higher secondary exams this year, while the state has more than 33,000 available seats in its degree colleges. Principals have been instructed to increase seat capacity where needed to accommodate all eligible students.

The move is aimed at eliminating barriers to higher education, though Barman acknowledged that competition for specific subjects and institutions will still be intense.

Reaction to Ramthakur College Controversy

Addressing the situation at Ramthakur College, Barman stated that the department was not involved in the alleged irregularities, which occurred outside official channels.

Meanwhile, the college’s principal, Papri Das Sengupta, said that the institution had already exceeded its sanctioned capacity. “Admissions were done strictly based on merit through the official online portal,” she clarified.

Government Focuses on Educational Access

With more than enough total seats to accommodate all Class 12-pass students, the Tripura government is aiming to ensure that no eligible student is left out. However, managing capacity constraints at high-demand colleges remains a challenge.

The minister’s pledge underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive and accessible higher education, even as it works to maintain transparency and fairness in the admission process.
