An important educational summit commenced in Itanagar today, August 11, 2026, where crucial discussions about higher education took place. Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu addressed the delegates comprising of vice chancellors of various universities and gave out certain directives for the future of higher education in the region. He emphasized on the necessity of transforming the traditional pedagogical approaches followed at various institutes and universities. Over the years, the main motive of higher education in the northeastern region has revolved around passing the qualifying exams, and awarding degrees to the students after the completion of their course. However, CM Pema Khandu called for an immediate end to this practice and stated that the colleges and universities in the state need to shape up and transform into problem-solving centers. His directive has led to quite a few debates amongst the delegates including teachers, professors, and educational planners who have come together for the summit in Itanagar.
From Being Merely Degree Distributors, Colleges Need to Turn into Problem-Solving Hubs -
While addressing the delegates during the summit, CM Pema Khandu emphasized the need for universities to change and take a turn towards developing practical skills amongst the students so that they are able to address the real-world problems. The chief minister noted that unless and until the students are not trained to tackle the local issues, their sheer proficiencies in academics would not amount to anything. He further added that the universities and colleges in the state bear a great responsibility, and it is their prime duty to ensure the development of society. Therefore, the educational institutes need to reorient their policies and focus more on solving the existing problems rather than just distributing degrees. Many of the education experts present at the summit shared similar views, claiming that local challenges require local solutions developed by the young minds.
Focus Areas of the Universities and Colleges Should be on Regional Infrastructure, Climate, and Other Needs -
The chief minister’s directive has brought out the need for the day for a more practical approach to higher education. He noted that the geographical conditions and local climate of the state have a great impact on the lives of the people. The northeast region, including Arunachal Pradesh itself, has several topographical challenges including landslides and slippery, muddy roads. These problems are not present anywhere else in the country, and hence, the local issues require local expertise. The universities and colleges need to channel their research and efforts in addressing the existing problems, including the ones related to infrastructure, environment, and other community-specific issues. For instance, engineers and doctors need to be trained to handle the local challenges as opposed to generic problems faced in other parts of the country. Pema Khandu further added that by doing so, the universities and colleges would not only provide the students with hands-on experience but also help the administration gather vital information for tackling the issues.
Changes in Curriculum are Necessary for Implementing the New Guidelines -
With this new directive from the chief minister, all educational institutes including universities across the northeastern region need to revise their curriculum. Pema Khandu instructed the academic councils to make the necessary amendments to the curriculum, including more practical training. He further urged that the colleges need to focus more on problem-solving than theory. Additionally, the faculty members and researchers need to come up with relevant research works to benefit the local populace and tackle the existing social issues. It was also stated that unless and until the universities change their approaches towards higher education, no support would be provided to them by the administration. All the delegates comprising of university representatives assured the chief minister that they would look into the matter and revise their curriculum with effect from the next academic year so that no time is wasted.

All the universities and colleges in the northeastern region are likely to benefit from this new directive of the Arunachal Pradesh government.
