CJP Parliament March LIVE: Huge Turnout for Protest, Delhi Police Denies Claims of Violence
New Delhi is under tight security as thousands gather for the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) 'Chalo Sansad' March on Day 1 of the July Session of Parliament at Jantar Mantar. Reports of internet blackouts and police violence flooded social media. However, Delhi Police denied the allegations of violence, arrests, and internet blackouts at the protest. This protest is one of the largest movements driven by youth in recent history, demanding that the leaks of exam papers be investigated, that the education system be improved, and that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign.
Internet Blackout Claims Spark Discussion
Protesters in central Delhi claim that the mobile internet disruptions began for many around Jantar Mantar. Reports of communications being disrupted by signal jammers fueled claims of an internet blackout. These allegations have been denied by Delhi Police, who have stated that there was no internet blackout and asked people not to believe the unverified posts on social media. While there have been reports of poor mobile connectivity, there has been no verified claim that services were intentionally disrupted.
Delhi Police deny there was violence during the protests.
As videos began to emerge of a confrontation involving protesters and barricades, many postulated that the police were violent and forceful with the protesters. In response, Delhi Police said the claims were false and that the protest was being handled in an orderly manner. They said there was no violence or detaining, as was previously described. Police said the current measures of controlling the crowd were implemented as a standard security measure due to the proximity of the location to the Parliament.
Simultaneously, media reports began to show there were violent confrontations after protesters began to break the restrictions and advance toward the Parliament. Videos in this era began to emerge of police using batons to disperse the crowd.
Why Is the CJP Protest Happening?
In just the last few months, in large part due to the student body, the CJP movement has been gaining a large amount of traction. Frequent changes to examinations, alleged leaks, and faulty recruitment have all caused mass frustration in the student body.
As a result of their demands for:
- Immediate reform of the entire examination process
- Punishments for those involved in the education system corruption and examination leak
- Removal of the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan
The movement has gained traction and support from multiple parties and education groups.
Increased Security in Central Delhi
As the march approached, the Delhi Police made it clear that spreading toward Parliament had not been approved. In the New Delhi District, authorities enacted prohibitory orders, allowing for protests only in the previously mentioned approved spots, like Jantar Mantar. Increased security was implemented for the entire day on all roads surrounding Parliament Street, Vijay Chowk, and the nearby areas. Blockades, vehicle inspections, and diversions caused issues for commuters all day. Security and inspections for the Metro caused temporary interruptions at some stations before normal operation was resumed.
Government Offers To Begin Negotiations
Protests were still going on when some major political news happened. CJP representatives confirmed that they were invited to have a discussion with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda.
According to those who planned the protests, the visit would allow negotiations between the government and the people who led the protests. However, the people who are protesting say that the demands will not change until they receive some form of guarantee.
