CIET NCERT Hosts Webinar on Misinformation, Disinformation and Malicious Information
The Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), NCERT, invites you to an online talk on the identification and response to harmful and misleading information available in the rapidly growing digital world that goes beyond the framework of social media. The talk will be held on 11 August 2026, from 4 PM to 5 PM.
CIET NCERT’s Online Talk on Misinformation will be held on August 11
The Ministry of India, under the banner of CyberPeace, collaborates to host this webinar along with NCERT. CIET NCERT provides a webinar specific portal with the details of the webinar.
This webinar targets the three categories of harmful information:
- Misinformation refers to the intentional sharing of false or unintentionally shared false information or statements.
- Disinformation refers to the intentional creation and distribution of false and misleading information.
- Malicious Information consists of information and content designed to intentionally cause harm to a person, group, or community.
The context and the intent are most important in assessing harmful information. These are some of the important differences that need to be understood in the context of false statements.
Why Media Literacy Matters in Education
This webinar focuses on the importance of media and digital literacy within education. Media literacy, in CIET's program, is described as the ability to access and decode media messages and resulting critiques of assessment.
When students understand the qualities of differing media and the digital message they receive, they will be able to decipher if a media message contains truth or not.
A student who knows the source of a claim, knows where to find supporting information, and is able to rank sources of information and assess presentation types can navigate the world of digital information.
Emerging Information Risks and Webinar
This also corresponds to broader digital safety issues in education. Within CIET's cyber safety programs, they address the risks and safety issues presented by deepfakes, privacy violations, AI fraud schemes, and other threats.
The webinar makes the distinction between malicious information, misinformation, and disinformation relevant due to the ability of digital generative AIs to create content with credibility.
The webinar will focus on the safety aspect of information relating to media literacy and education rather than a strictly tech-focused approach.
