CIET-NCERT begins 3-day FDP on ICT and Emerging Technologies for Educators in Odisha

Odisha: Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET-NCERT) has started a 3-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on emerging technologies in education, organized for teachers, teacher educators and pupil teachers. The FDP on ‘ICT and Emerging Technologies’ began on October 7, 2026, at Vikram Dev University, Jeypore, Odisha. The first day of the orientation programme focused on building educators’ preparedness for teaching in a digitally evolving environment. The event witnessed the participation of teachers and teacher educators from schools, teacher-education institutions, universities, and education departments.

Contextually, the need for this programme emerges from the fact that technology is increasingly being used for teaching, learning, assessment, and capacity development. However, CIET-NCERT’s ICT curriculum guidelines observe that while information and communication technologies offer huge potential for enhancing learning, there are wide variations in technology-readiness among teachers and learners.

CIET-NCERT FDP Commences with Focus on Digital-Ready Educators

Prof. Hrushikesh Senapaty, Vice-Chancellor, Vikram Dev University was present as the Chief Guest for the inauguration session. Other dignitaries present at the function included Prof. Rajendra Pal, CIET-NCERT; Sri Maheswar Chandra Nayak; Dr Prashant Kumar Patra; Dr Ruchi Dwivedi; Prof. Bharti; and Capt. Dr Lakshman Patra.

The purpose of the FDP is to go beyond just introducing the participants to the tools and to encourage them to think through how ICT and emerging technologies could be leveraged to promote learning.

Who Will Benefit from the 3-day FDP?

The FDP has attracted a diverse range of education stakeholders from across the state, who are expected to benefit from the sessions as well as contribute to making Odisha’s education system future-ready. These stakeholders include:

  • Directorate of Teacher Education & State Council of Educational Research and Training (DTE&SCERT)
  • Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA)
  • District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs)
  • Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)
  • Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS)
  • Universities and colleges
  • Schools and other educational institutes

The varied representation of educationists from different areas and levels is likely to make the FDP more effective by encouraging discussions that go beyond the needs of one institute or teacher-education department.

What Will the Educators Learn?

The FDP has been designed around the theme of ICT and Emerging Technologies for Education with a view to enhancing participants’ understanding of technology-enabled pedagogies. The need for such an FDP is felt more today than ever before as classrooms across the country are witnessing increased use of digital resources, tools, media, and methodology.

However, merely adopting technology is not sufficient for achieving learning outcomes. As per CIET-NCERT’s ICT curriculum guidelines, there are significant variations in school-readiness and teacher-readiness for integrating ICT in pedagogy, which makes it imperative to take a nuanced approach to mainstreaming technology in education. It is important to build the capacities of educators to support transformative learning experiences through appropriate pedagogies.

Who Are the Key Organizers of the FDP?

Prof. Shireesh Pal Singh, Head, DICT & Training Division, CIET-NCERT, and Dr Ruchi Dwivedi, Assistant Professor, MPD, CIET-NCERT are leading the organization of the FDP. In addition, Capt. Dr Lakshman Patra has been designated as the local coordinator for the event.

The involvement of national-level teacher-education experts and a local coordinator is expected to ensure that the FDP’s objectives are achieved in terms of building the capacity of the educationists in Odisha.

Why is ICT Training Important for Teachers?

The process of digital transformation in education goes beyond just introducing technology in the classroom. To maximally benefit from the potential of technology, teachers must have a sound understanding of how technology can be used for promoting interactive learning, accessibility of educational resources, use of multimedia resources, and other related purposes. It is crucial for teachers to understand how technology can be leveraged for engaging students, especially when classrooms are diverse in terms of learning needs, access to and exposure to technology, and preferred mode of learning.

An effective technology-enabled classroom will be one that taps into the potential of technology to democratize education by offering multiple modes of accessing learning material and providing a level playing field for all learners.

Inclusive Education Needs to be at the Forefront

The focus of the FDP on building teacher-readiness for digital education has far-reaching implications for students. By understanding how technology can be used for enabling interactive learning, educators can play a key role in facilitating multiple modes of accessing learning material and ensuring that there are no barriers to learning for any student. This includes using text, audio-visual material, presentations, videos, and other digital resources alongside traditional classroom methodology to offer a more engaging and interactive learning experience.

However, as emphasized by education experts, the use of technology should be learner-centric and must not distract from the primary goal of education, which is to ensure that concepts are driven home to students of all backgrounds and levels of academic proficiency. With this perspective, it is the responsibility of teachers to determine how technology can be used for enhancing their teaching and making learning more accessible and engaging. In this context, the 3-day FDP in Odisha is an important step towards making India’s education system future-ready by building the capacities of teachers, teacher educators, and other education stakeholders.
