The Chandigarh Administration have declared all government, government-aided, and private schools closed today on August 17, 2026. This decision was taken as a compensatory day off for students’ and teachers’ active participation in the 80 th Independence Day celebrations across the Union Territory’s main parade grounds. The Education Department issued directions for this special day off for the younger generation who marched, sang and presented dramatic displays as part of the national festival’s festivities. In addition, the UT administration also announced that all regular classes for the next day would begin as usual on August 18, 2026.

Active Participation in Independence Day Parade Events - 

The compensation day off comes as thousands of students from various schools joined the demanding practice routines before presenting their best performance in the Independence Day parade. This included:

  • Parade Drills: Student contingents and NCC members taking part in the ceremonial march past around Sector 17’s Parade Ground.
  • Dance and Song Shows: Student representatives performing grand dance and song numbers on Republic Day stage.

The UT Education Department has directed all school authorities and private managements to declare today as a holiday for all students and staff. Key highlights of the directives include:

  • Closure today: All schools across Chandigarh are closed for today, August 17, 2026.
  • Staff relief: All teaching and non-teaching staff member who worked on the Republic Day are also on a day off.
  • No online classes/refrain from assigning HW: The authorities also reminded schools to avoid organizing online classes and submission of class assignments for today.

Parents and Students Express Satisfaction Over Holiday Decision - 

News of a day off after active participation in the Republic Day commemorations has created a positive sentiment among parents and teacher bodies. It is understood that most students attended dawn rehearsal practices from last week before the 80 th Independence Day celebrations on August 15 th . Many parents said their wards had gone through strenuous activities and harsh weather during the outdoor practice grounds. The school teacher’s body was also happy about the holiday as it would allow students and teaching staff to relax and prepare for the resumption of classes and the term-end examinations.
