IIT Rorkee to Establish 'SANCHAY National Craft Resource Centre

IIT Roorkee has announced the establishment of 'SANCHAY' a national-level Craft Based Resource center under the Ministry of Textiles. The centre aims to preserve India's traditional crafts by integrating modern design, technology and skill development to empower artisan communities.

Roorkee - The Indian Institute of Technology ,Roorkee has announced the approval for setting up 'SANCHAY' a Craft Based Resource Centre (CBRC) under the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP)of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

The centre will be established on IIT Roorkee's campus and will focus on safeguarding India's rich craft heritage by combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, design innovation and education. The initiative aims to strengthen traditional crafts, especially endangered crafts of Uttarakhand and Himalayan regions.

SANCHAY will work towards empowering artisan communities through structured training, designed development, digital documentation and technology enabled workspaces. The centre will also create the digital digital archieves, craft encyclopedias and artisan directories and will be linked with platforms such as ONDC and Make in India. The project is being led by the Department of Design at IIT Roorkee, under the leadership of professor Apurbba Kumar Sharma, along with a team of coordinators and researchers.

Speaking about the occasion, IIT Roorkee, Director Prof.  K.K,Pant said that SANCHAY reflects the institute's commitment to integrating india's craft heritage with modern science and technology to promote innovation and community empowerment. Officials from the Ministry of Textiles also highlighted that the centre will support traditional knowledge systems, enhance global visibility of Indian Crafts and help artisans access their markets.

With this initiative IIT, Roorkee aims to position itself as a national hub for craft preservation, innovation , and sustainable development, contribution to the India's cultural economy and global creative leadership.
