What is the Reason Behind the Allocation of PG Medical Seats?

The training of medical graduates in specialised fields is imperative for the development of a specialised health workforce, to effectively address the health needs of the people. The allocated additional seats will help in training in several specialised fields of medicine, surgery and allied specialties, including, general surgery and orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and oncology.

Since, Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous state, specialised health services are required to be available in all areas to help address health needs of the far flung populations. This requires availability of a workforce trained in different specialised areas of medicine and surgery. Whether the allocated additional seats will ultimately benefit the state will depend on the timely availability of required faculty, infrastructure and necessary clinical and teaching aids for training in specialised areas of medicine and surgery.

What Connection Is There Between the ₹415 Crore Grant and the National Medical Education Plan?

The inclusion of Himachal Pradesh within this larger scheme by the Central Government aims to create an additional 10,000 medical seats (UG & PG) over a period of five years, with an estimated total outlay of ₹15,000 crore.

Addition of the 320 seats is part of the larger plan to develop medical education and professional healthcare workforce of the country. The ₹415 crore grant is to set up the approved seats. Though the announcement has not cleared all the 320 seats are available for admissions.

When Can We Expect the New PG Medical Seats?

As per the directions of Union Health Minister, the State Government has to finalize the required procedures and implementation work for making the additional capacity a reality. The aim is to benefit the students as well as the patients.

The announcement of approval does not allot specialty and colleges for candidates. Aspirants need to wait for the official information before considering these seats for admission. Candidates should continue to wait for official notifications on the NEET PG, verify seat availability through applicable seat matrix and make their plans to seek admissions to postgraduate medical courses accordingly.
