CBSE, NCERT Train Teachers on New Class 9 Maths & Science Books: What Will Change in Classrooms?
Before students are even able to see the new NCERT Class 9 Maths and Science books, teachers are getting ready to do things differently. The first step toward getting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 into the classroom was the extensive orientation workshop on the new Class IX Maths and Science books being held by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) at the CBSE Integrated Office Complex at Dwarka, New Delhi. This step was to prepare teachers to understand the new books beyond the content.
This workshop was attended by 110 teachers of CBSE-affiliated schools (Maths: 58, Science: 52), and also reached out to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS). These teachers are expected to take on the role of Master Trainers for the new curriculum being adopted by schools across the country.
Not Only New Books, New Ways to Learn
The books join the new Indian curriculum in the NEP 2020 and the NCF-SE 2023. The new books move away from memorization and move towards understanding, curiosity, and helpful knowledge. They have streamlined the processes for learners and have now used curriculum innovation practices and modified the steps using curriculum flexibility.
CBSE and NCERT understand that modifying books doesn't improve learning. That's why they created the seminar, so teachers can consider and see the changes and improvements in day-to-day learning.
NCERT Staff Share New Curriculum Thoughts
Prof. Anup Rajput, Prof. K. Vijayan, Dr. Rishikesh Kumar, Prof. R. R. Koireng, Prof. R. K. Parashar, Dr. Ashish Kumar Srivastava, and Dr. Arun Pratap Sikarwar were the prominent NCERT employees.
In the seminar, participants learn of some new concepts:
- New books and learning philosophy
- New way of teaching and assessing skills
- Classroom engagement through learning
- Applying Mathematics and Science knowledge
- Critical thinking and problem solving
- New-age evaluation techniques of NEP 2020
Participants were encouraged to move away from textbooks, and instead show and teach students to question ideas and concepts, and apply knowledge to the world around them.
After Classroom Rollout: Teacher Preparation
As NCERT slowly updates Class 9 textbooks with the new curriculum, teacher preparation has become equally critical to the new textbooks. Recently, CBSE published a series of circulars and organized a series of webinars. CBSE also published new curriculum guidelines to aid the schools during this phase.
These efforts include regular, hands-on academic support to teachers before the new textbooks are implemented in their respective classrooms.
Why This Workshop Is an Improvement for Students
The impact of this initiative is expected to be a noticeable improvement in the classrooms, even though students may not interact with the initiative directly. Trained teachers are expected to achieve the following:
- discourage rote learning
- encourage lesson linkages to teaching
- engage the class with questioning and discussions
- foster inquiry and reasoning
- practice constructive alignment and inquiry in the classroom
These expected changes are in line with NEP 2020, which aims to teach students problem-solving, analysis, and thinking skills that are essential in today's world.
Creating a Master Trainer Ecosystem
CBSE stated that all the teachers who have completed this training will act as Master Trainers and that this training will reach a much wider network of teachers in all the CBSE schools.
The expected outcome is to create a model that will help schools to adapt to the teaching and learning processes that the new textbooks will introduce. The model will also provide a greater level of uniformity in adopting the new curriculum.
Steps Towards Modern Classrooms in India
Overhauling India’s school curriculum is a monumental undertaking that has occurred infrequently in the last hundred years. Along with a revised curriculum, the inclusion of experiential learning, and competency-based assessment, the expansion of teacher capacity has become a necessary step.
The CBSE-NCERT orientation workshop focuses on the pedagogical and academic readiness of teachers so they can enact changes in the classroom in response to curriculum reforms. Attending workshops also gives teachers the confidence to step into newly defined roles.
Final Thoughts
The orientation workshop takes another step toward the competency-based education system India is building as part of the NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023. In the early phase of rollout with Master Trainers, CBSE and NCERT are attempting to reach the educational reform goals and spirit with the revised Class 9 Mathematics and Science textbooks. For students, the reform means innovative and relevant lessons that teach beyond the curriculum and encourage experiential learning.
