CBSE Supplementary Exam 2026: Students' Opportunity of a Lifetime
For thousands of Class 10 and Class 12 students with a compartment status in the 2026 CBSE board results, the department has provided a way to clear the remaining subjects without having to drop an academic year. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that the Class 12 Exam for all subjects across the Science, Commerce, and Arts streams will be held on July 15, 2026. The Class 10 Exams will take place between July 15 and July 22, 2026, with each subject being examined on a separate day.
The compartment exam, or back paper exam, is a yearly process for students who fail one or two subjects. Students are provided an opportunity to clear a subject or subjects based on the same syllabus and the same marking scheme as in the main board exam. As per the details available with Collegedunia, 1,63,800 Class 12 students were in the compartment category as per the 2026 board result announced on May 13, 2026. This is a significant increase compared to the 1,29,095 students in the compartment category the year before, thereby increasing the pressure on students in this exam cycle.
Registration Process: Fast Action Needed After School Sign-Ups
Many believe that the option to individually register for the CBSE supplementary exam exists, and this common misconception leads to the biggest mistake. Direct applications to the board are only permitted for private candidates. The board provides a platform for Schools to process a List of Candidates (LOC). For the 2026 cycle, the submission LOC process for schools opened on June 2, 2026, and the registration process for Class 12 compartment candidates is scheduled for May 30 to June 17, 2026.
To sit for the supplementary exam, students must approach the exam coordinator of their respective schools within a few days after the examination results are declared to finalise their inclusion in the LOC. Upon the close of the registration process, if a student's name is not on the LOC, an Admit Card will not be issued and the student will not be able to sit for the exam. Private candidates are not required to go through a school to register for the exam and can register directly on the CBSE-issued portal. After the registration process is concluded, the board generates the Admit Cards based on the information provided in the registration form. Students are required to provide the details of their main board roll number, school code, and exam centre, and are issued an Admit Card to proceed with the process.
Important Information Regarding Your Admit Card and Eligibility
The admit card for the September CBSE compartment exams is expected to be publicly released about 10 days before the exam, in the 1st week of July, 2026. Candidates will be able to download their admit cards from cbse.gov.in. Private candidates will be able to access their admit cards through their application or roll numbers. Regular candidates will be required to pick up their school’s signed admit cards, as the Board will not send any physical copies home to students.
It is imperative that candidates check the details printed on their admit cards as soon as they are downloaded. The admit card will include the candidate’s name, roll number, exam centre’s address, along with the subject codes and the time to report. Any discrepancies should be communicated to the regional office or the school prior to the exam date. Candidates will not be allowed entry to the exam without the admit card and a valid government-issued ID. Candidates will be allowed to take the recessive exams only if they have failed the main CBSE board exam in at most one Class 12 subject and have taken the board exam. The minimum passing criteria are scoring at least 33 per cent in the theory and practical exams.
Policies for the Exam: Consequences of Result Timelines and Process
Students must be on time. If you arrive late, you cannot enter the testing room (and will not take the test). You may not enter the room with hand-held electronics (including phones, smart watches, etc.). Arriving at the testing room with any electronic device will result in serious disciplinary action, including the cancellation of your exam.
Thus far, the result of the compartment test will be available in the first week of August 2026. Students may check their results on the website cbseresults.nic.in and enter their roll number, school number, and admit card ID. Students should know that the score of the compartment test affects the student’s final result for the failed subject, providing some relief. Students who are concerned about the status of their college admissions should know that almost all central universities and institutions allow students to provisionally enrol, with the understanding that they pass the compartment test before a specified date. Students should pay close attention to the institution's admission guidelines and should not expect an automatic deferral.
