New Delhi. : The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major transformation in the design of Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations for 2026, aligning the evaluation system more closely with competency-based education as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
50% Questions to Be Competency-Based
Beginning with the 2026 exam cycle, 50% of every CBSE board question paper will now test real understanding and application of concepts, marking a major shift away from memorisation-driven learning.
These competency-oriented questions will include:
- Case studies
- Data interpretation sets
- Source-based questions
- Real-life situation-based problems
- Applied MCQs
CBSE emphasised that such questions encourage analytical thinking, logical reasoning, conceptual clarity, and problem-solving—key skills crucial for lifelong learning.
Under the revised structure:
- 50% – Competency-based questions
- 20% – Standalone MCQs
- 30% – Short and long descriptive answers
This new format is intended to help students engage deeply with subjects rather than simply recalling textbook material.
Two Board Exams a Year for Class 10 from 2026
In another landmark reform, CBSE confirmed that students of Class 10 will get two board exam opportunities annually, starting in 2026.
This system, inspired by NEP 2020, will:
- Reduce pressure on students
- Allow them to improve their performance
- Provide flexibility in academic planning
- Promote continuous learning
Students may choose the best score out of the attempts.
