BITS Pilani Goa Transfers 4 Technologies: AI Chemistry Tool, Biomass Solutions and More

Key Highlights & Summary

BITS Pilani’s K.K. Birla Goa Campus has formalised four technology transfer agreements through its Technology Transfer Office, FACTT, with four industry partners. The innovations include nanocellulose composites, the conversion of biomass ash into valuable materials, an AI-assisted Optical Chemical Structure Recognition (OCSR) platform for chemistry workflows, and sensor-based aquaculture water-monitoring solutions. Developed by faculty members and their teams, the technologies aim to strengthen industry–academia collaboration, support Indian startups and MSMEs, and advance sustainable, industry-ready innovation.

BITS Pilani Goa Transfers 4 Technologies: AI Chemistry Tool, Biomass Solutions and More

GOA, 23rd October 2026: Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani’s Technology Transfer Office, Foundation for Advisory Consultancy and Technology Transfers (FACTT), has announced the transfer of technologies developed by faculty members of the BITS Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus to four industry partners. Four technology transfer cases, covering three innovators and four licensees, have been formalised through the exchange of agreements.

These include:

  • Nanocellulose composites, process for synthesis and applications thereof, developed by Prof. Saurabh Patankar – transferred to Reliable Chemical Pvt. Ltd.
  • Synthesis of nonporous silica, carbon black and alkali metal salt from biomass ash, developed by Prof. Saurabh Patankar – transferred to GreenShift Energy Pvt. Ltd.
  • OCSR (Optical Chemical Structure Recognition) for downstream chemistry workflow, an AI-assisted software platform for recognising, correcting, editing and reusing organic chemical structures from printed or hand-drawn images and reaction schemes, developed by Prof. Subhadeep Banerjee – transferred to Fluoresight Bioprobes Pvt. Ltd.
  • Aquaculture water-monitoring technologies, developed by Prof. Sumit Biswas, comprising a floating device with sensors for monitoring water parameters, a system and device to monitor the quality of water for carp culture, and a portable container for transfer of fish seedlings – transferred to Piscaid Pvt. Ltd.

Prof. Suman Kundu, Director, BITS Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus, emphasized the Institute's commitment to strengthening industry–academia collaboration. He stated, “BITS Pilani is focused on developing valuable intellectual property aligned with industry needs and market opportunities, while fostering collaborations that bridge the gap between academic innovation and commercial application. These efforts align with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Prof. Atish Paul, Coordinator IPEC & BITS-TEC, emphasised that effective technology transfer goes beyond protecting intellectual property; it involves identifying industry needs, engaging the right partners, and creating pathways to transform research outcomes into market-ready products and solutions.

Mr. Lionel C. Pereira, Founder, Reliable Chemicals, emphasised the importance of developing innovative technology solutions that address real-world industry needs. He highlighted the importance of close collaboration between industry and academia partnerships in creating new business opportunities, particularly for MSMEs and smaller enterprises, by enabling them to access emerging technologies, explore new markets, and strengthen their competitiveness.

Mr. Kunal Godambe, Founder, GreenShift Energy Solutions, appreciated BITS Pilani’s efforts in translating research and innovation into practical, industry-ready technologies through its technology transfer and licensing initiatives. He highlighted that such collaborations enable companies to access promising innovations, accelerate their adoption, and develop sustainable energy solutions.

The innovations are outcomes of research carried out by the faculty members and their teams at BITS Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus. Together, they address needs ranging from sustainable materials and the conversion of biomass waste into value-added products, to faster chemistry workflows through AI-assisted structure recognition, and real-time, data-driven water quality management for fish farmers. All these innovations align with the national priorities of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the SDGs, thereby supporting Indian start-ups and MSMEs through indigenously developed technologies.
