Over 5 Lakh Students Join Ahmedabad’s ‘Billion Minutes of Peace’ Project to Curb Aggression

Ahmedabad, November 12, 2025:
In an unprecedented move to address rising aggression and emotional imbalance among schoolchildren, the Ahmedabad City District Education Officer (DEO) has launched the ‘Billion Minutes of Peace Appeal Project’, a large-scale meditation initiative involving over five lakh students across the city.

The initiative was introduced after a series of concerning incidents of school violence, including a tragic case at Seventh Day School in Maninagar, where a student was allegedly killed by a classmate over a minor argument. The incident sparked deep concern among parents, teachers, and education leaders about growing impulsive and violent behaviour among children.

A Billion Minutes of Peace: A Citywide Meditation Movement

Under the ‘Billion Minutes of Peace’ project, students from nearly 1,800 government and private schools in Ahmedabad will dedicate 10 minutes daily to guided meditation during school hours.

The project aims to cultivate mindfulness, empathy, and emotional balance among children while helping them manage anger and stress more effectively.

“Through regular meditation, we want to help students replace aggression with awareness and impulsive reactions with self-control,” an education department official said.

Teachers have been trained to lead the sessions, guiding students through calm breathing exercises and reflective thinking practices. The programme emphasizes developing patience, focus, and compassion — qualities essential for a peaceful learning environment.

Building Emotional Resilience in Schools

The education department highlighted that consistent meditation practice can significantly reduce emotional strain caused by factors like excessive screen time, academic pressure, and social anxiety — all of which have been linked to increasing irritability and behavioural issues among schoolchildren.

Alongside meditation, schools are incorporating emotional intelligence lessons, helping students learn how to resolve conflicts peacefully and identify signs of distress in themselves and their peers.

“Children today face multiple psychological and social stressors. This initiative gives them a structured way to calm their minds, regulate emotions, and build empathy,” the DEO’s statement added.

Monitoring Progress and Long-Term Impact

The education department has instructed schools to track behavioural improvements and submit progress reports over time. Teachers will observe changes in classroom dynamics, conflict resolution, and student interactions.

Officials expect measurable outcomes such as reduced incidents of bullying, aggression, and classroom disruption, as well as improved student focus and participation.

“‘A Billion Minutes of Peace’ is not just a campaign—it’s a cultural movement to bring emotional intelligence and mindfulness into the core of school education,” an official said.

Towards a Peaceful Generation of Learners

By institutionalizing meditation as part of the school day, Ahmedabad aims to foster a generation of emotionally aware, compassionate, and resilient learners. The project reflects a growing recognition in India’s education system that mental well-being and emotional stability are as vital as academic achievement.

Experts believe that if successfully implemented, the Ahmedabad model could serve as a blueprint for mindfulness education across other Indian cities, helping schools nationwide nurture peace, empathy, and responsible social behaviourAhmedabad Launches ‘Billion Minutes of Peace’ Project: 5 Lakh Students Practise Daily Meditation to Curb Aggression
