Avathon, IIT Roorkee Launch Physical AI Lab to Advance Industrial AI Research
Avathon, a company focused on Autonomy for Operations, and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) have announced the launch of the Avathon Physical AI Lab (Avathon PAL), a research initiative aimed at advancing Physical AI for industrial applications.
The proposed laboratory will be established in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Roorkee and will serve as a centre for collaborative research in Physical AI. The initiative will also seek to strengthen research partnerships with academic institutions in India and across the world.
The collaboration combines Avathon's expertise in applying artificial intelligence and autonomy to industrial operations with IIT Roorkee's research capabilities in areas including optimisation, machine learning, knowledge representation and multi-agent systems.
Focus on Physical AI for Industry
The Avathon PAL will focus on some of the complex challenges associated with bringing AI and autonomous systems into industrial environments. Areas of interest will include supply planning, large-scale logistics and knowledge-driven autonomous systems capable of continuous learning.
The initiative reflects the growing focus on Physical AI, where artificial intelligence is applied to physical operations and real-world environments rather than being limited to conventional enterprise software applications.
Research conducted through the laboratory is expected to explore how autonomous systems can improve industrial decision-making, planning and operations across sectors.
IIT Roorkee Research to Connect With Industry
The new laboratory will work closely with Avathon's AI Center of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. The two centres are intended to create a link between academic research and industrial deployment.
Research emerging from IIT Roorkee will have the potential to feed into real-world industrial applications developed by Avathon. The company's Bangalore centre will serve as an industrial counterpart to the academic research carried out through Avathon PAL.
The collaboration is expected to cover industrial sectors including mining, energy, manufacturing, logistics and aerospace.
Doctoral Fellowships and Student Opportunities
The Avathon PAL will support several academic and research activities, including sponsored doctoral fellowships, collaborative research projects and student internships.
Students will also have opportunities for industry exposure through Avathon, while workshops and technical events will connect researchers at IIT Roorkee with the wider Physical AI and artificial intelligence research community.
These activities are expected to provide students and researchers with opportunities to work on real-world industrial problems while gaining exposure to emerging AI technologies.
IIT Roorkee Faculty to Lead Research Initiative
Prof. Sugata Gangopadhyay, Principal Investigator of Avathon PAL in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Roorkee, said the partnership would combine academic research freedom with real-world industrial relevance.
He highlighted the opportunity for researchers to work on challenging industrial problems in collaboration with a company focused on deploying Physical AI in operational environments.
Pervinder Johar, CEO of Avathon and an IIT Roorkee alumnus, said the partnership was personally significant and described Physical AI as a pathway to bringing greater autonomy to the industrial economy.
Building India's Physical AI Research Ecosystem
The launch of Avathon PAL comes as artificial intelligence research increasingly moves beyond software-based applications toward systems that can interact with and operate in physical environments.
By combining academic research, industry expertise and student development, the initiative aims to contribute to the development of autonomous technologies for industrial operations.
The laboratory is also expected to strengthen IIT Roorkee's engagement with industry and create new opportunities for researchers and students working in artificial intelligence, machine learning, optimisation and autonomous systems.
