:- Experts shed some light on the future, application, practicality and challenges in the field of Power Electronics and AI

New Delhi: IEEE Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Power Electronics Student Chapter, IEEE JMI Student Branch and the Department of Electrical Engineering JMI has jointly organized a panel discussion on the Topic: “Power Electronics- Reliability, Artificial Intelligence are future research directions”. The event was organized on June 21, 2022 on the occasion of Power Electronics Day celebrated across the globe.

The panelist were distinguished world known professors of Power Electronics and Green energy area namely; Prof. Frede Blaabjerg- Fellow IEEE & Prof. Huai Wang from Aalborg University, Denmark and Prof. Saad Mekhilef- Fellow IEEE, University of Malaya, Malaysia, Prof. Rajesh Kumar from MNIT Jaipur, Dr. Sreenivas Karanki- Head, IEEE PELS India Committee, IIT Bhubaneswar, Dr. Ahteshamul Haque- Faculty Advisor IEEE PELS Student Branch and Branch Counsellor JMI.

Experts shed some light on the future, application, practicality and challenges in the field of Power Electronics and AI. A number of topics were discussed, namely the need to electrify the system and how unavoidable the use of power electronics is in the modern world due to new kinds of loads emerging. Top quote from Professor Mekhilef was, “It’s not a matter of choice, it’s a necessity at this time”.

Usages, reliability and limitations related to Power Electronics and AI were also discussed. Application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in accurately forecasting the amount of power generated, parameter identification, condition monitoring of photovoltaic plants, the use of expandable AI to predict the temperature inside the router, carbonization of energy supply and the increase in electric vehicles and inverters were a few of the applications that were discussed in detail by all the panelists.

Towards the end it was concluded that the use of AI with power electronics will play crucial role to achieve decarbonization goal globally.

To conclude, it was a lively discussion and held the audience spellbound till the very last minute. It was engrossing enough to prompt students to do some research in this field. The session ended with a vote of thanks proposed by the host, Mohd Zaid.

Event had participants from 8 different countries and 25 Institutes of India and Globe. The event was organized in virtual mode.
