The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) organized an initiative to plant trees at its headquarters, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability. This initiative was part of the nationwide initiative 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam'. Prof. Yogesh Singh, Chairman of AICTE, Prof. Shyama Rath, Member Secretary, and other senior staff members participated in this initiative. AICTE Joins ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign With Plantation Drive at Headquarters

One sapling is a small action. But, with every institution in India brings many saplings, it creates a movement. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) understands this and has initiated a plantation drive in their headquarters, supporting the movement for sustainability and collective use of resources, called ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, which promotes responsible concern for the environment.

AICTE Chairman, Prof. Yogesh Singh, Member Secretary, Prof. Shyama Rath, and other senior officials planted the saplings as part of the campaign. The drive shows the AICTE’s dedication to the conservation of nature and to sustainable practices for the community.

What Is The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign?

‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ is a plantation movement in which participants plant a tree to honor their mothers and practice caring for the environment. The campaign is a fusion of an emotional appeal with an eco-friendly action, which motivates participants to take part in a climate action.

From the number of participants, it is clear that the campaign is a success. Indian governmental departments, educational institutions, public organizations, and individuals have all participated in this movement, conducting drives to increase the number of trees and to practice sustainable living.

AICTE's Sustainable Campus Initiatives

With its recent plantation drive, AICTE has shown its desire to expand its sustainability commitment in the higher education space. By encouraging green campuses, energy efficiency, waste management, and climate awareness among engineering colleges, management institutes, and technical universities, the Council has been promoting sustainability more and more across its institutions.

The latest plantation drive demonstrates the importance of teaching environmental stewardship to students and gives them opportunities to share their knowledge with the communities.

Supporting Mission Life

Promotion of sustainable everyday habits is the main goal of Mission LiFE. By planting trees, one is making a commitment to improving and protecting the health of ecosystems, especially urban ecosystems, while improving the quality of air among the remaining efforts.

The public now recognizes the value of engaging educational institutions in support of the sustainable development goals to expand the teaching and learning of sustainability concepts beyond the classroom.

The Importance of Tree Planting

Environmental policies implemented at the national level are important, but professionals have consistently observed that drives for tree planting on a community level help fortify ecological sustainability.

Some benefits of trees are that they help:

  • Clean the air
  • Absorb Carbon Dioxide
  • Improve Biodiversity
  • Decrease Urban Heat
  • Improve Soil and Water Conservation
  • Create a Better Learning Environment

When schools and universities take part in these drives, they engage the school community in promoting good environmental practices beyond the school.

The Increase in the Importance of Green Education

In the last few years, sustainability has been ingrained within the ecosystem of India’s education system. There has been an increase in the number of universities, colleges, and tech schools that have adopted the practices of green campuses, environmental education, and community engagement as tools to promote active participation in climate action amongst students.

The participation of the All India Council for Technical Education of the ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ campaign is emblematic of the shift that integrates the learning of the environment and service in education along with improving academic standards.

Final Thoughts

Examples of scattered activism, such as the plantation drive at AICTE Headquarters, reveal that the best motivators of environmental sustainability are collaborative efforts. AICTE's membership of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign not only echoes the call of the campaign's advocates, but also supports the belief that educational institutions are catalysts of environmentally conscious citizens in addition to skilled, professional citizens. Initiatives in other institutions will further support that small acts, such as the planting of saplings, have great value.
