New Delhi. : The Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be introduced in India’s school curriculum for students from Class 3 onwards, beginning the 2026–27 academic session. The move aims to equip both students and teachers with digital-age skills essential for the future workforce.
CBSE Prepares AI Framework for School Education
A comprehensive plan to integrate AI across grades is being developed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
“We need to move fast so that students and teachers are properly aligned with this technology over the next two to three years,” said School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar, as quoted by PTI.
He added that one of the major challenges would be training over one crore teachers nationwide to effectively deliver AI-related lessons.
Pilot Project Underway for Teacher Training
A pilot project has already started to train teachers in using AI tools for lesson planning and classroom instruction. “Our objective is to prepare both the learner and the teacher for the digital economy,” Kumar noted.
Currently, more than 18,000 CBSE-affiliated schools offer AI as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards through a 15-hour introductory module, while it is available as an optional subject for Classes 9 to 12.
The upcoming expansion to younger classes marks a significant shift toward early digital literacy and future-ready education.
AI and Jobs: Balancing Disruption with Opportunity
The announcement coincided with the release of a NITI Aayog report on Artificial Intelligence and Jobs, which highlighted the changing employment landscape.
According to the report, around two million traditional jobs may be displaced due to automation and AI adoption. However, eight million new roles could be created if India establishes a strong AI ecosystem.
The report also called for collaboration between the India AI Talent Mission, India AI Mission, and key stakeholders in academia, government, and industry.
India’s Road to Becoming an AI-Driven Nation
The NITI Aayog report emphasized that India’s success in the AI economy will depend on robust infrastructure, data availability, and sustained policy coordination.
With the introduction of AI learning from Class 3, India is taking a decisive step toward building an AI-ready generation capable of leading innovation in the digital era.
If implemented effectively, this initiative could help India safeguard its workforce while positioning the country as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence education and innovation.
