ABVP Seeks Academic Review After Objection to Jamia Exam Question on Muslim Minorities
New Delhi. : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has called for an academic review following objections to a question included in a recent undergraduate examination at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI).
The issue arose during the BA (Hons) first-semester examination for the paper Social Problems in India, conducted on December 22. One of the questions asked students to “discuss with examples the atrocities against Muslim minorities in India,” which prompted criticism from the student organisation.
ABVP Raises Concerns Over Academic Balance
The ABVP, which is affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated that the wording and focus of the question reflected what it described as a lack of balance in the academic framework.
Sarthak Sharma, Delhi state secretary of the ABVP, said the framing of the question limited the scope of discussion on Indian society. He argued that the issue went beyond a routine error in question-setting and pointed towards a broader ideological concern.
“This is not merely an academic lapse, but it also indicates an ideological imbalance,” Sharma said in a statement.
Call for Neutrality in Academic Assessments
The student body emphasised that education should promote understanding, inclusivity, and national unity rather than encourage division among communities. According to the ABVP, examination questions should reflect a broad and balanced social perspective, especially in a country as diverse as India.
The organisation expressed concern that focusing on a single minority group could present a partial view of social realities and leave students with an incomplete understanding of wider societal challenges.
ABVP further stated that questions which appear to guide students toward a predetermined conclusion could undermine the neutral character expected in academic institutions and contribute to ideological polarisation on campuses.
Demand for Review and Institutional Response Awaited
In its official statement, the ABVP called on the Jamia administration to conduct a thorough academic review of the examination paper. The organisation also urged the university to strengthen internal checks and review mechanisms to prevent similar controversies in the future.
As of now, the university administration has not issued an official response or clarification regarding the matter. The incident has once again brought attention to the broader debate on academic freedom, neutrality, and the responsibility of universities to ensure that assessments reflect the diversity and complexity of India’s social landscape.
