Jharkhand Academic Council Opens Applications for Chief Minister Merit Scholarship Scheme (CMMSS) 2026: A Comprehensive Guide for Aspirants

Jharkhand Academic Council invites applications for the 2026 Chief Minister Merit Scholarship Scheme (CMMSS). Eligible Class 8–12 students can apply online by March 31 to receive financial support based on merit.

RANCHI, March 19 – In a significant move to bolster educational opportunities for talented youth across the state, the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), Ranchi, has officially invited applications for the Chief Minister Merit Scholarship Scheme (CMMSS) for the 2026 cycle. This initiative, overseen by the School Education and Literacy Department, Government of Jharkhand, aims to provide consistent financial support to meritorious students from Class 9 through Class 12.

As of March 19, 2026, the application window is officially active, allowing thousands of eligible students to secure their academic future. The scheme is rooted in government resolutions passed in 2019 and 2022, designed to identify and nurture academic excellence within the state's public and semi-public school systems. The CMMSS is specifically tailored for regular students enrolled in recognized institutions across Jharkhand. The scope of the scheme is broad, encompassing several types of educational facilities, including, Government Schools (Rajkiya and Rajkiyakrit), Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, Model Schools and Project Schools, Minority Schools, Aided and Unaided Schools recognized by the government.

For fresh applicants, the scholarship is currently targeted at students who are presently enrolled in Class 8 and have successfully passed their Class 7 examination. This ensures that the merit-based support begins as students transition into their high school years. Selection for the CMMSS is determined through a competitive examination conducted by the Jharkhand Academic Council. In an effort to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent talent from surfacing, the council has declared that this entrance examination is entirely free of charge for all eligible candidates.

For those who have already entered the scheme in previous years, the 2026 cycle also opens the door for scholarship renewals. This multi-year support system is categorized based on the student's current academic standing and the year they initially qualified for the scholarship:

  • Class IX: Students who passed the scholarship exam in 2025 are eligible for the 1st Fresh Scholarship.
  • Class X: Students who qualified in 2024 may apply for the 2nd Renewal.
  • Class XI: Students who qualified in 2023 are eligible for the 3rd Renewal.
  • Class XII: Students who qualified in 2022 can apply for the 4th and final Renewal.

The Jharkhand government has established strict academic benchmarks to maintain the scholarship's prestige and ensure continued excellence. To remain eligible for renewal in the subsequent class, a student must secure at least 60% marks in their previous annual examination.

The application process is handled through a combination of digital submission and school-level verification. Prospective candidates must visit the official JAC website at jac.jharkhand.gov.in and navigate to the Exam Form Portal Section.

All students, whether applying for a fresh scholarship or a renewal, must provide the following core documents:

  1. Admit Card from the qualifying scholarship exam.
  2. Aadhaar Card for identity verification.
  3. Bank Passbook details to facilitate the direct transfer of funds.
  4. Caste Certificate issued by the Jharkhand government (only for students applying under specific reserved categories).

For Renewal Candidates, the marksheet of the previous class (Class IX, X, or XI depending on the renewal stage) is mandatory to verify the 60% marks threshold.

Adhering to the prescribed schedule is vital for a successful application. The Council has outlined the following timeline for the 2026 cycle:

  • Online Application Window: Opened on March 12, 2026, and will close on March 31, 2026.
  • School Submission to DEO: School authorities must verify and forward forms to the District Education Officer (DEO) by April 6, 2026.
  • DEO Online Verification: The window for District Education Officers to verify applications online runs from March 14 to April 2, 2026.
  • Final Submission to JAC: The DEO must submit all verified applications to the JAC by April 11, 2026.

The JAC has noted that the dates for downloading admit cards and the actual date of the competitive examination will be communicated through a separate notification in the near future.
