President Droupadi Murmu Confers National Awards on Teachers on Teachers’ Day 2026
New Delhi, September 5, 2026: President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Awards on Teachers on educators from across the country at a ceremony held in New Delhi on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu highlighted the critical role of teachers in strengthening India’s education system and advancing the country’s development. She said that education remains one of the most effective means of realising the constitutional ideal of equality of opportunity.
The President also credited the efforts of teachers for helping India achieve a negligible primary school dropout rate, and appreciated educators for their contribution to this national achievement.
President Highlights Importance of School Education
President Murmu said that school education forms the foundation of the entire education system. While knowledge and skills can be acquired at different stages of life, she noted that lessons in good conduct and values are particularly effective when imparted during childhood.
She emphasised the importance of teachers focusing on the intellectual, physical and moral development of children from the early grades. Such an approach, she said, can help prepare future generations to become capable students and responsible citizens.
Teachers Have a Special Role in Supporting Students
The President drew attention to the diverse backgrounds and circumstances of students in Indian schools.
She noted that some students come from economically disadvantaged families, while others are first-generation learners. Some move from village schools to larger city schools, while others may be shy, lack self-confidence despite having significant talent, or require additional support as children with special needs.
According to the President, teachers have a special responsibility to build confidence among such students and support those who may feel a sense of inadequacy for various reasons.
Focus on Academic Excellence, Skills and Entrepreneurship
President Murmu stressed that academic excellence, skill development and entrepreneurship are important for India’s development.
She said that establishing India as the skill capital of the world and transforming the country into a knowledge superpower should remain among the nation’s key priorities.
The President also emphasised the importance of developing a world-class education system as India progresses towards the goal of Viksit Bharat.
Teachers Key to Building Viksit Bharat
Highlighting the contribution of teachers, President Murmu said that educators bring the education system to life. She called for ensuring that no student is deprived of opportunities for quality education.
She urged teachers to nurture students not only through academic knowledge but also by developing qualities such as inspiration, morality and sensitivity.
According to the President, affection and dedication towards students can help teachers make a lasting contribution to their overall development and to the building of a stronger and more inclusive India.
