NLU Delhi Signs MoU with BPR&D to Strengthen Research in Policing and Criminal Justice

New Delhi:National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to strengthen collaboration in policing research and criminal justice. The agreement aims to bring legal academics and police research experts together to address issues related to law enforcement and the justice system.

According to the university’s official announcement, the collaboration will facilitate joint research projects, academic publications, expert consultations, policy discussions and training programmes for police officers and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system. It will also encourage academic exchange between the two institutions, creating opportunities to share knowledge and expertise.

The implementation and coordination of activities under the agreement on behalf of NLU Delhi will be handled by Project 39A, the university’s criminal justice research and litigation centre. The centre works on issues concerning criminal justice, legal processes and access to justice, making it a key part of the university’s contribution to the collaboration.

The agreement was signed in the presence of senior officials from both institutions, including BPR&D Director General Alok Mittal and NLU Delhi Vice-Chancellor Professor G. S. Bajpai. Their participation reflects the importance of cooperation between academic institutions and government organisations in addressing complex legal and policing challenges.

The partnership comes at a time when research, professional training and evidence-based policymaking play an important role in improving criminal justice systems. By combining legal research with practical insights from policing, the collaboration could help identify challenges in law enforcement and support informed discussions on possible reforms.

The initiative also highlights the expanding role of universities beyond classroom teaching. Through research partnerships and engagement with public institutions, legal universities can contribute to policy development, professional training and a deeper understanding of the justice system.

The MoU establishes a framework for future cooperation between NLU Delhi and BPR&D. The impact of the partnership will depend on the research projects, training programmes and policy initiatives undertaken under the agreement.
