IIT Delhi Strengthens Student Well-Being With Academic Flexibility, Mental Health and Grievance Support
New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has outlined a series of measures aimed at strengthening student well-being, academic support, mental healthcare, diversity, inclusion and grievance redressal on campus.
The institute said student welfare remains a priority and that its support systems are designed to create an academic environment where students feel heard, supported and able to seek help when needed.
Academic Relief and Curriculum Flexibility
IIT Delhi said several academic measures have been introduced to help reduce student stress.
Since the implementation of the new curriculum in 2025, the institute has:
- Reduced first-semester credit loads.
- Introduced life-skills courses.
- Limited first-year departmental classes to around 30–60 students.
- Reduced weekend examinations.
- Maintained flexibility in credit distribution.
- Removed the minimum CGPA requirement for the B.Tech degree, effective from the 2024–25 academic year.
Mentorship and Faculty Interaction
The institute has also strengthened student-faculty engagement through the Student-Teacher Interaction Council (STIC).
Faculty members interact with students through:
- Semester-wise student get-togethers.
- Open-door office hours.
- Project guidance.
- Hostel-level engagement.
- Class Committee feedback mechanisms.
These initiatives are intended to provide students with greater opportunities to discuss academic and other concerns with faculty members.
24/7 Mental Healthcare Support
IIT Delhi said its student well-being infrastructure includes 24/7 access to counsellors and psychiatrists, including experts associated with AIIMS and VIMHANS.
The support system also includes:
- Reimbursement for external mental healthcare.
- Emergency response protocols.
- Academic Unit Wellness Committees.
- Student mentorship programmes.
- Wellness activities involving yoga and meditation.
The institute's UG Buddy Programme has also been expanded to include PG Buddy and International Buddy programmes from 2025.
The National Resource Centre for Value Education in Engineering (NRCVEE) at IIT Delhi has incorporated yoga and meditation modules as part of its long-term wellness initiatives since 2001.
Targeted Academic and Student Support
Student representation and welfare initiatives are supported by bodies including the Student Affairs Council (SAC) and the Cocurricular Academic Interaction Council (CAIC).
For students facing academic difficulties, the Academic Progress Group (APG) has provided evening tutoring and credit-backlog support since 2023.
Multiple Grievance Redressal Channels
The institute has established several channels through which students can raise concerns and complaints.
These include:
- A centralised, reference-tracked ERP portal.
- Board for Student Welfare (BSW).
- SC/ST and OBC cells.
- Hostel wardens.
- Internal Complaints Committee.
- Confidential counselling channels.
IIT Delhi said these mechanisms are intended to facilitate transparent and accessible resolution of student concerns.
Diversity, Inclusion and Bias Sensitisation
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) has been conducting non-discrimination and accessibility initiatives across the campus since 2022.
The institute also conducts induction and sensitisation programmes for freshers through initiatives including:
- Initiative for Gender Equity and Sensitisation (IGES)
- Initiative for Caste Equity (ICE)
- Office of Accessible Education (OAE)
The programmes address implicit and explicit biases related to caste, gender, language, region and ethnicity.
IIT Delhi to Continue Strengthening Support Systems
IIT Delhi said student welfare and mental well-being will remain an important priority and that the institute will continue strengthening its support infrastructure.
The measures cover academic flexibility, mentorship, mental healthcare, academic assistance, grievance redressal and inclusion, with the broader objective of ensuring students receive appropriate support throughout their academic journey.
