New Delhi, September 3, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has launched its first academic programme at its Sonipat Campus, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of the Institute’s academic activities. The inaugural class of the Postgraduate Diploma in Solar Systems and Management began on September 3, 2026.
The one-year programme has been launched in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and INES – Institut National de l'Energie Solaire, France. IIT Delhi’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE) is conducting the programme.
The inaugural batch comprises nine international fellows from eight countries. The fellows, nominated by ISA, will receive hands-on training in solar technology and applications from IIT Delhi faculty members, experts and industry partners.
The programme has been sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and is designed to strengthen solar energy expertise and capacity-building across ISA member countries.
Prof. Ramesh Narayanan, Head, Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi, said the initiative places the Institute at the forefront of global energy education and management. He added that the programme will prepare participants to serve as trainers at Solar Technology and Application Resource Centres (STAR-C) in ISA member countries.
Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, Professor-in-Charge, IIT Delhi Sonipat Campus, described the launch as a milestone for the campus, as it marks the beginning of its first teaching programme with physical classes. He also said that IIT Delhi plans to introduce more academic programmes at the Sonipat campus in the coming years.
As part of the programme, fellows who successfully complete the PG Diploma will undertake a one-month internship in Europe focused on applied solar technologies. They will subsequently be assigned to STAR-C centres in their respective countries.
STAR-C centres are designed to provide ISA member countries with skills, infrastructure and an innovation ecosystem to accelerate solar energy deployment, strengthen institutions, create green employment opportunities and support sustainable economic growth.
The PG Diploma programme follows the Framework for Action (FFA) formalised between IIT Delhi and the International Solar Alliance earlier this year. The framework seeks to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, with particular emphasis on capacity building, academic collaboration and human resource development across ISA member countries.
The launch of the programme marks a new phase for IIT Delhi’s Sonipat Campus while strengthening the Institute’s international engagement in renewable energy education and solar technology.
